Autumn-themed items at the Mainz Environmental Store
From September 1 through October 31, the Mainz Environmental Center will take on an autumnal theme, focusing on mushrooms and habitat trees. Anyone interested is invited to stop by to learn more and participate in the accompanying program.
Focus: Habitat Trees
They can be seen in Mainz’s parks, and especially in the Drusuwall: habitat trees—pruned and weakened trees that are being preserved as valuable habitats for numerous animal and plant species. But what defines a habitat tree? What structures provide a habitat for animals and other organisms? And how are such trees prepared and maintained?
A small exhibition provides vivid insights into the habitat of a habitat tree and highlights the importance of these trees for biodiversity. A short film and various exhibits, such as woodpecker cavities and tree trunks riddled with fungi, can be viewed at the Environmental Shop.
For all ages: On October 9 at 4:30 p.m., a guided tour titled “Habitat Trees in the Drususwall—Habitats for Plants and Animals” will be offered. A tree inspector from the Mainz Department of Parks and Environment will lead a tour through the park, offering fascinating insights into his work and answering any questions. Those interested can register at the Environmental Shop by phone, email, or in person.
Focus: Mushrooms
Fall is mushroom season. At the “Mushrooms” themed table, visitors can learn all sorts of interesting facts about these fascinating organisms and their habitats—organisms that belong neither to the plant nor the animal kingdom. Those interested can find out about dates for mushroom excursions, participation in mycological working groups, and exhibitions in Mainz and the surrounding area. How do you properly forage for edible mushrooms, where can you get expert advice from a mushroom specialist, and which identification guides are recommended? Or would you rather play it safe and start your own mushroom garden? At the Environmental Store, you can also pick up expert tips to take home.
