Women in local politics
For the fifth time, the Heinrich Böll Foundation has conducted a survey on the representation of women in German local politics.
Women in local politics 2022
To this end, Dr. Elke Wiechmann and Prof. Dr. Lars Holtkamp from the FernUniversität Hagen analyzed 77 major cities to determine the proportion of women in city councils, among parliamentary group leaders, and committee chairs, as well as the number of female mayors and municipal election officials.
Mainz ranks 8th in the current 2022 ranking, representing a significant improvement. In the second gender ranking in 2010, Mainz was still far behind in 65th place out of 79 cities surveyed. In the third ranking in 2013, Mainz ranked 38th (out of 79 cities), and in the fourth ranking in 2017, it ranked 34th (out of 73). The other four major cities in Rhineland-Palatinate are ranked as follows: Kaiserslautern ranks 11th, Ludwigshafen 17th, Koblenz 40th, and Trier 45th.
