The purpose of the association is to contribute to political education in Germany in order to strengthen citizens' ability to engage independently and critically with political issues. A functioning democracy requires civic engagement and a democratic culture. With this in mind, the association aims to educate and counteract the instrumentalization and manipulation of political judgment.

Elected representatives and institutions in a democratic state can only be legitimized through the acceptance and support of mature and discerning citizens. This civic competence is also a prerequisite for people to be willing to stand up for democracy, its further development, and against totalitarian or extremist developments. The purpose of the association is realized through informational events, publications such as the association's journal "Linkswärts – Mainzer Hefte für linke Politik" (Leftward – Mainz Journal for Left-wing Politics), and internet presentations such as the official website www.linkswärts.de.

Active members meet at regular intervals to discuss, plan, and implement key areas of work, projects, events, and publications.
