Welcome to the Hechtsheim district
In "Hexem", a Rhine-Hessian farming village meets the city's largest industrial estate. On this page, we introduce you to the district that combines tradition and future and offer practical links for life in Hechtsheim - from the children's city map, events, daycare centers and senior citizens' guide to the local administration.
District portrait
The long-established residents of Hechtsheim affectionately refer to their district as "Hexem," which was first mentioned in documents in 808. In the summer of 1969, it was incorporated into Mainz under the name Mainz-Hechtsheim.
Despite its size, Hechtsheim has retained the character of a traditional Rhine-Hessian farming village. With its winding and branching streets, its cul-de-sacs and cozy paths, its courtyards and buildings dating back three centuries, it has lost none of its familiarity and identity. The old town center is also home to the old town hall, which features what is probably the oldest pike coat of arms above the door.
In the 1960s, Hechtsheim's economic boom took shape with the creation of an industrial park: today, it is the largest industrial park in Mainz. Various media companies, as well as research and IT companies, are located on over 100 hectares.
The location is attractive due to its optimal transport connections. The motorway ring road with its junction offers quick access to the transport channels in the Rhine-Main area. And so Hechtsheim's motto could be: cultivating traditions while looking to the future. Because in addition to increasing commercial development, the district is characterized by agriculture and viticulture.
If you would like to learn more about the centuries-old tradition of winegrowing, you can do so in an entertaining way on the winegrowing trail located in the Hechtsheim district of "Am Kirchenstück." The combination of urban structure and tranquil rural surroundings gives Hechtsheim its special charm. This is particularly beneficial for the coexistence of long-time residents and newcomers.
Neighborhood festivals, such as the traditional Hechtsheim wine festival "Am Kirchenstück" or the winegrowers' days, promote community spirit. An active club life brings young and old together.
