Today, Tuesday, August 4, 2020, there was a traffic accident involving several vehicles in Mainz-Bretzenheim. The accident happened right in front of Fire Station 1, in full view of the firefighters. For reasons that are still unclear, an older man lost control of his vehicle while turning from Koblenzer Straße onto Jakob-Leischner-Straße.
First, he passed the traffic island there, where he knocked over a traffic sign. He then collided with another vehicle in the opposite lane before crashing sideways into another car. It is probably thanks to the traffic sign that the car lost some of its speed before colliding with the other cars. As a result, there was mainly bodywork damage to the two other cars in the opposite lane. The two female occupants got away with a scare. One of the two drivers was taken to hospital as a precaution. The person who caused the accident was also taken to a hospital in Mainz as a precautionary measure for further examination.
Firefighters witnessed the accident and were therefore able to respond immediately. They were the first to attend to the people involved, as no ambulance was on site at that early stage. They also cordoned off the traffic area and ensured fire safety. Once the ambulances arrived, the patients were handed over to the emergency doctor. Jakob-Leischner-Straße remained completely
closed in the accident area for the entire duration of the operation. The road could only be reopened once the vehicles involved had been picked up by the towing service.
In addition to the fire department, the Mainz police and Mainz rescue service were also involved in the operation.
