04.12.2023 - Fire in waste disposal company challenges fire department
The Mainz Fire Department was alerted at 4 a.m. to a fire at a waste disposal facility on Wormser Straße. Employees at the facility noticed a fire in a waste storage hall and immediately called the fire department.
When the fire department arrived, the warehouse was fully engulfed in flames. Due to the rapid spread of the fire, the first responders raised the alarm level and called in additional professional and volunteer firefighters.
The fire department was able to prevent the fire from spreading. However, the high heat radiation caused damage to a neighboring warehouse.
The warehouse had to be emptied to allow for targeted extinguishing measures. The company's own resources were used to achieve a quick and successful outcome.
Due to the spread of smoke, the smell of burning was noticeable in the city area. There was no danger to the population.
The operation is currently still ongoing and is expected to be completed in the course of the morning of December 4, 2023. No information can be provided at this time regarding the cause of the damage or the extent of the damage.
04.12.2023 - Mass pile-up after snowfall on the A 60
On Monday evening, there was a multiple vehicle collision on the A60 motorway, in which several vehicles were involved. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the police.
When the fire department arrived, the situation was initially very confusing, as several vehicles had come to a halt on the road and in the ditch next to the road. One vehicle, in which four people were initially trapped, was found in the ditch behind the guardrail. When the emergency services arrived, the accident victims were already being professionally cared for by first responders. The fire department freed the people from the car and handed them over to the emergency medical services. As other vehicles were also involved in the accident, several people had to be cared for at the scene. This was initially done by the fire department and then taken over by the rapid response team as the operation progressed. Fortunately, none of the people involved were seriously injured. Four of the accident victims were taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment as a precaution. The fire department and police secured the scene until the 10 cars involved in the accident had been recovered.
Due to the accident, the highway in the direction of Bingen was completely closed for approximately one hour. In addition to the Mainz professional fire department, the Finthen volunteer fire department, the rescue service, and the highway police were also on duty.
Due to the heavy snowfall, there were numerous call-outs and further accidents in the Mainz city area, as well as an increased number of emergency calls to the fire department control center.
05.12.2023 - Vehicle fire in Mainz Gonsenheim
On Tuesday afternoon around 11:30 a.m., the Mainz Fire Department was called to Mainzer Straße in Gonsenheim to respond to a burning vehicle. A thick column of smoke was already visible on the way there, and several passersby had gathered in the vicinity. However, the scene of the incident was not visible from the street, as it was located in a densely built-up backyard between Mainzer Straße and Grabenstraße.
When the first responders arrived on the scene, one vehicle was fully engulfed in flames and the fire had already spread to a second car. Fortunately, the initial report that the fire threatened to spread to residential buildings was not confirmed. The fire was quickly extinguished by a team wearing breathing apparatus.
The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. No one was injured. The professional fire department was on duty with forces from fire stations 1 and 2, as well as the rescue service and the police.
09.12.2023 - Power outage in Mainz also challenges the fire department
The widespread power outage in the state capital of Mainz placed a heavy strain on the fire department, especially in the first few hours. Since power has been largely restored, the Mainz fire department has been back to normal operations since 4 p.m.
At the start of the power outage around noon, dozens of emergency calls had to be handled simultaneously. Heavy smoke was reported at two parking garages. In addition, people reported being stuck in elevators. Since it was clear that this was a widespread power outage and its duration could not be estimated, volunteer fire departments from Bretzenheim, Marienborn, Mombach, Hechtsheim, Stadt, and Weisenau were alerted with 30 personnel. In addition, 30 additional off-duty personnel from the professional fire department were alerted.
This enabled all operations to be handled promptly and the fire department control center to be reinforced with additional personnel. In addition, a command center was set up, which was in constant contact with the police, public utilities, the university hospital, and the rescue control center. From here, precautionary plans were made for a prolonged power outage, which fortunately were not necessary. Medical disaster control and technical relief service (THW) personnel also supported the command staff.
After it was confirmed that, after about an hour, only a small part of Mainz's old town was still without power and all communication channels were functioning as usual, the Mainz fire department was able to release all off-duty personnel and volunteer firefighters back into their free time at 4 p.m.
In connection with the power outage, the following operations had to be carried out by around 120 firefighters and disaster control personnel:
- 2 x Heavy smoke from parking garage (emergency generator running)
- 8 x Person in elevator
- 1 x fire alarm
- 3 x reconnaissance
- 1 x smell of gas
17.12.2023 - Fire in fast food restaurant in the Große Bleiche
In the late afternoon of the third Sunday in Advent, at around 5:30 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department control center received a report of heavy smoke coming from a fast food restaurant on Große Bleiche. Heavy smoke was already visible on Große Bleiche in the Münsterplatz area as the fire department approached the scene.
When the fire department arrived, heavy smoke was billowing from a fast food restaurant and an adjacent snack bar. A fire had broken out in the ceiling area of a ventilation system in the kitchen of the fast food restaurant. Attempts by the operator to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers were unsuccessful. The fire was quickly brought under control by a team wearing self-contained breathing apparatus.
The adjacent premises on the ground floor and first floor were checked by a total of three other teams wearing breathing apparatus. The smoke had spread to several units in the building. Fortunately, no people were found in the premises.
However, the follow-up extinguishing work proved to be time-consuming: in both snack bars, the false ceilings had to be opened or removed in order to reach the last embers. During the operation, Große Bleiche had to be completely closed to traffic in the area of the scene. The fire department's operation was completed at around 9:15 p.m.
The Mainz professional fire department, the Mainz-Stadt volunteer fire department, the rescue service with two ambulances, and the police with several patrol cars were on site. The fire department cannot provide any information about the cause or extent of the damage. The police have launched an investigation.
30.12.2023 - Basement fire in the Hartenberg-Münchfeld district of Mainz
Late on Friday evening at around 11:25 p.m., the Mainz police reported a basement fire on Abraham-Lincoln-Straße in the Hartenberg-Münchfeld district of Mainz.
Based on this report, the fire department control center alerted a firefighting unit from the professional fire department and the Mainz-Stadt volunteer fire department with the alarm code "apartment fire-basement fire."
Smoke was coming out of a tilted basement window on the first basement level of an apartment building. The smoke from the fire had already spread to the stairwell. The fire department therefore instructed the residents of the apartment building to remain in their apartments.
While a team wearing heavy breathing apparatus and equipped with a C-pipe began fighting the fire in the basement, the stairwell was checked for people.
After the quick report "fire out," the basement and stairwell were mechanically ventilated and measurements were then taken with a multi-gas detector. Measurements were also taken in an apartment on the first floor because smoke entering the apartment could not be ruled out due to a tilted window. All measurements taken were normal.
After about an hour, the fire department's operation was complete. Finally, the scene was handed over to the police, who initiated an investigation into the cause and extent of the damage.
In addition to the Mainz fire department with a total of 26 personnel, the rescue service with two vehicles and the police with one vehicle were also involved in the operation.
