01.01.2022 - Fire in Mainz care home for the elderly - nurse prevents worse
In the early evening of New Year's Day, shortly before 6 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department's control center initially received a fire report from a fire alarm system in the nursing home on Raupelsweg. While the first responders were still on their way, an emergency call was received via 112 confirming a fire in a resident's room. The fire department control center immediately alerted additional forces. The rescue control center was also informed of the fire, so that extensive rescue services were also alerted and dispatched to the scene.
When the fire department arrived, the fire in the resident's room had already been extinguished. However, the hallway of the living area was filled with smoke due to the open room door. The fire department checked the remains of the fire using a thermal imaging camera and took them outside. The other rooms in the living area were also checked. As all the other room doors were closed, no smoke entered the rooms and the residents there were able to remain there. The residents were in their rooms in safe areas, so evacuation was not necessary, also because the fire had already been extinguished. The hallway was then cleared of smoke using a positive pressure fan.
The nurse who successfully extinguished the fire and the resident of the room where the fire broke out were given medical attention on site by the emergency services and then taken to a hospital in Mainz for observation with suspected smoke inhalation. The other residents of the affected living area were also examined by the emergency services. However, no treatment was necessary, so the rapid response team that had been alerted did not need to be deployed.
The fire department's operation was completed at around 7:20 p.m.
The Mainz professional fire department, the regular emergency services with three ambulances and two emergency doctor vehicles, the health section management with the organizational manager and senior emergency doctor, and the police with several patrol cars were on site. The Mainz-Stadt volunteer fire department, which was also alerted, and the rapid response team of the emergency services did not need to take action.
The fire department cannot provide any information about the cause or extent of the damage. The police have launched an investigation.

13.01.2022 - Room fire in Hechtsheim retirement home ends mildly
During the night of Thursday, the Mainz fire department was called to a room fire in a retirement home in Mainz-Hechtsheim at around 12:30 a.m.
On site, the fire was confirmed in a changing room used by nursing staff. Thanks to the very prudent and professional actions of the facility's nursing staff, smoke was prevented from spreading to the escape routes and living areas, and no residents were injured. Even before the fire department arrived, the affected residents had been brought from their rooms to safe areas and taken care of. Some of the residents found shelter with friendly neighbors for the duration of the fire department's operation.
The fire on the ground floor was quickly extinguished. The smoke had spread vertically through the duct shaft to the rooms above, reaching the third floor. The escape and rescue routes were not affected. Several fans, a ventilation device, and smoke protection curtains were used to remove the smoke from the windowless rooms.
The extent of the damage is not known. The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
The operation was completed at around 3:30 a.m. on Thursday morning.
The Mainz-Hechtsheim Volunteer Fire Department and the Mainz Professional Fire Department were on site with the firefighting units from both fire stations, the rescue service with several ambulances and emergency doctor vehicles, the health section management with the organizational manager and senior emergency doctor, and the police and the criminal investigation department.

20.01.2022 - Chimney fire in the morning hours
Shortly after 7 a.m., during the change of guard, the Mainz fire department was called to a chimney fire on Carl-Goerdeler-Straße. After lighting the stove, the residents noticed unusual smoke in the living room. Looking outside at the chimney top, the homeowner also noticed heavy smoke. He called the fire department via the 112 emergency number.
While the fire department was still investigating, soot in the chimney swelled so much that it threatened to completely block the chimney cross-section. This became apparent when sparks were ejected from the chimney. The chimney was kept open and swept using special sweeping tools via the turntable ladder. At the same time, the temperature of the chimney was continuously monitored on all floors using a thermal imaging camera. The chimney cladding had to be opened to check for any embers and to inspect the ceiling penetrations. Due to an increased concentration of carbon monoxide in the room air, some of the work had to be carried out using self-contained breathing apparatus.
At around 9:20 a.m., the fire department's work was completed and the site was handed over to the responsible district chimney sweep.
The Mainz professional fire department was on site with vehicles from both stations, the rescue service with an ambulance, and the police with a patrol car.
