06.06.2022 - Several fires challenge the Mainz fire department in the night of 06.06.2022
During the night of June 5 to June 6, 2022, there were four fires in the old town and new town areas of Mainz. At around 3:20 a.m., the fire department control center received the first report of a fire in a building in the old town. Three motorcycles had caught fire for reasons that are still unclear. The fire spread to the facade and caused smoke to fill the building. As a result, the apartments in the building were inspected. In addition to the firefighting unit from Station 2, the rescue firefighting vehicle from Fire Station 1, the small alarm vehicle (FW 2), and the city's volunteer fire department with a fire engine were also on site.
While the forces were still working in the old town, a second fire was reported in the old town. The fire engine of the city's volunteer fire department was then withdrawn from the previous operation and dispatched to the burning garbage can. The tank fire engine from fire station 1 also arrived to provide support. The fire was quickly brought under control.
Shortly afterwards, at around 3:50 a.m., a total of 20 emergency calls were received by the fire department control center, including some from Wiesbaden, reporting a fire in the Neustadt district of Mainz. Several garbage containers were burning in a backyard here. The fire spread to the roof of an adjacent garage, making it necessary to open the roof using a motorized cutter. A reserve HLF from Fire Station 2 was called into service for the work and the FF-Stadt was again dispatched to the scene. The tank fire engine from Fire Station 1 was also on site.
While work was being carried out at the scenes in Neustadt and Altstadt, a burning portable toilet was reported in the Neustadt area. The Bretzenheim Volunteer Fire Department took over the firefighting operations at the toilet.
Due to the parallel operations and the high number of incidents, the Marienborn and Bretzenheim volunteer fire departments were called in to man Fire Station 1 at around 4:15 a.m. This operation was concluded at around 6:00 a.m. Some of the operations lasted into the early hours of the morning.
The rescue service was also on duty to secure the scene, as were the police and the criminal investigation department with numerous officers.
The causes and the resulting property damage are the subject of police investigations. If you have observed any irregularities, please report them to the nearest police station.

19.06.2022 - Several operations in a row
Building fire, Am Lungenberg
At around 7:25 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department was called to Hartenberg in the street at Lungenberg. Initially reported as a burning tree, the first police officers on the scene discovered that the fire had already spread from a burning tree to the roof of a residential building. Firefighters from both professional fire stations and the Gonsenheim volunteer fire department entered the attic apartment wearing breathing apparatus and were ultimately able to reach the affected area via the roof.
Fortunately, the fire had not yet spread deep into the roof, so no major damage was caused. As no smoke had entered the apartment and no water damage was caused by fighting the fire from outside, all residents were able to return to their apartments. The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. The damage is estimated at approximately €6,000.
During the operation, the vacant stations of the professional fire department were staffed by the volunteer fire departments of Bretzenheim, Marienborn, and Innenstadt.
Fire in a gazebo
At around 8:40 p.m., while responding to the call at Hartenberg, the fire department was called to a burning garden shed on Ebersheimer Weg in Oberstadt. The approximately 4m² garden arbor burned for reasons that are still unclear. The fire was quickly extinguished thanks to a powerful extinguishing operation with two C-hoses. In addition to the professional fire department, the volunteer fire departments from the city center and Weisenau were also deployed.
Smoke alarm beeps
At 9:03 p.m., the fire department was called again to respond to a beeping smoke alarm on Flachsmarkt street. A smoke alarm could be heard on the third floor of a residential building. The emergency services forced open the apartment door. The smoke alarm had been triggered for no apparent reason in the bedroom. The alarm was deactivated and the apartment door was locked again. In addition to the professional fire department, the Bretzenheim volunteer fire department was also on duty here.

25.06.2022 - Luck in misfortune
An 83-year-old driver had a lucky escape this morning when he crashed his car on Gonsenheimer Straße. For reasons unknown, he crashed his car through a hedge in the parking lot of a discount store, knocked over a flagpole, fell about 2 meters over a retaining wall, and came to rest on the sidewalk with the vehicle on its passenger side. The driver was trapped in his seatbelt and was unable to free himself. A paramedic who happened to be passing by the scene of the accident took care of the driver, who appeared to be uninjured, until the fire department arrived.
The Mainz-Finthen Volunteer Fire Department, which was the first to arrive at the scene, secured the unstable car to prevent it from tipping over. Once the windshield had been removed, the person was able to leave the vehicle on their own and was taken to a Mainz hospital by the emergency medical services for further examination.
During the rescue operation, Gonsenheimer Straße was temporarily closed, which led to delays in public transport. In addition to the fire department, the emergency services were represented at the scene with an emergency doctor and an ambulance, as well as the police with two patrol cars.

26.06.2022 - Road accident with fatalities on the A 643 between Mainz and Wiesbaden
Late in the evening of June 25, 2022, a serious accident involving two cars occurred on the A 643 highway. Two people were killed and another person was slightly injured in the accident. As it was initially unclear to the fire department in which direction the accident had occurred, both the Mainz and Wiesbaden fire departments were alerted to the scene. The emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident almost simultaneously.
When the emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident, several first responders were attempting to free the two people trapped in one of the cars involved. However, due to the deformation of the vehicle, this was not possible without technical equipment.
After the victims were freed with heavy technical equipment, they were treated by the emergency medical services. However, the injuries of the two occupants were so severe that they died at the scene of the accident. Another person involved in the accident suffered minor injuries and was able to leave her car on her own. She was examined by the emergency medical services and taken to a hospital in Wiesbaden.
As the accident site was within the jurisdiction of the Mainz fire department, they also took charge of the operation. Due to the severity of the accident, the highway had to be closed for several hours.
The fire department cannot provide any information about the circumstances of the accident; the police have commissioned an expert to investigate the cause of the accident. The THW illuminated the long stretch of the accident site. In addition to the Wiesbaden and Mainz fire departments, the police, emergency services, and THW were on site with several personnel.
