02.03.2021 - Serious traffic accident on the L 425 (Hechtsheim < > Ebersheim)
At around 5:15 p.m. this Tuesday afternoon, there was a serious traffic accident on the L 425. Between the "Messegelände" intersection and Mainz-Ebersheim, a car crashed into a tree without braking. The driver was critically injured in the head-on collision, but first responders were able to free him from the vehicle and administer first aid before the fire department arrived.
By chance, two paramedics were also at the scene. One of them even had a professional rescue backpack with him, so initial treatment could be provided before the fire department and emergency services arrived.
The fire department arrived at the same time as the rescue helicopter and supported the emergency medical services personnel with a team to care for the patient. Another team extinguished the heavily smoking accident vehicle with the rapid intervention hose. The police had already contained the fire with two fire extinguishers. Another team from the fire department cordoned off the accident site together with the police.
After prolonged medical treatment, the injured person was transported to a hospital by ambulance.
The cause of the accident is unclear at this time, as is the extent of the damage.
A small amount of oil spilled as a result of the accident. After the accident vehicle was recovered by a towing service, the fire department collected approximately 60 liters of contaminated soil.
In addition to the fire department, three police patrol cars, an ambulance, a rescue helicopter, and an employee of the environmental agency were on the scene.
In the midst of these rescue operations and a huge traffic jam in both directions, another ambulance with a patient came from the direction of Ebersheim and was able to be guided past the accident site.

02.03.2021 - Apartment fire on the 13th floor, Mainz-Lerchenberg
At around 11:40 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department received several emergency calls reporting a fire in an apartment on the 13th floor of a building on Regerstraße.
Based on the report, a large number of firefighters were immediately alerted. This included personnel from fire stations 1 and 2, as well as firefighters from Drais and Finthen. The fire was clearly visible as soon as they turned onto Brucknerstraße.
The first firefighting unit to arrive from Fire Station 1 immediately entered the building with six men (three teams) wearing breathing apparatus. Two teams proceeded to the 12th floor, where the fire was located, and noticed slight smoke in the corridors. A smoke curtain was installed and the door was opened to fight the fire. The third team proceeded to the 14th floor to investigate. There, too, slight smoke was detected in the corridors.
The next responders from the Drais Fire Department were also sent into the building wearing breathing apparatus. Some of them formed a reserve team on the 12th floor, the so-called storage floor. Others assisted the emergency services on the 14th floor in opening the door and checking the apartment above the one on fire.
At the same time, other emergency personnel looked after the residents who had evacuated to safety in front of the building.
The fire in the apartment was brought under control approximately 20 minutes after the alarm was raised and extinguished approximately 10 minutes later. However, the follow-up extinguishing, inspection, and cleanup work continued until approximately 2:45 a.m.
Several residents received medical attention during the operation. However, most of the residents were not in any danger at any time, which is why a complete evacuation was not carried out. A city bus was temporarily provided to accommodate the residents of the 13th floor. But even these residents were able to return to their apartments at around 1:30 a.m.
The fire and smoke caused significant damage to the building's facade. The fire department is unable to estimate the amount of damage. The criminal investigation department has taken over the investigation.
The Mainz fire department's professional fire stations 1 and 2, as well as the Drais and Finthen volunteer fire departments, were at the scene with a total of 40 personnel.
The Bretzenheim and Marienborn volunteer fire departments were on standby at their equipment depots with approximately 20 personnel to ensure basic protection for further operations.
In addition to the fire department, the following forces were also deployed: the health section command with personnel from all emergency services, with approximately 15 personnel, as well as the Mainz police and the Mainz criminal investigation department.

17.03.2021 - Apartment fire with two minor injuries in Finthen
The Mainz Fire Department was notified at 6:15 a.m. this morning of an apartment fire on Am Weisel street. The caller reported flames coming from a window on the first floor of a three-story apartment building.
The fire department control center then triggered a B2 apartment fire alarm, alerting personnel from both professional fire stations and the Mainz-Finthen volunteer fire department. At the same time, the emergency medical services and police were also notified.
When the first firefighters arrived, seven of the eight residents had already escaped from the building. The remaining resident was escorted outside by the fire department during the operation.
Two of the three residents of the apartment where the fire broke out suffered minor burns and were treated by the emergency medical services as a precaution. One of the two people was transported to a hospital for further treatment of a hand injury.
The residents of the other three apartments and a woman from the apartment where the fire broke out were unharmed. The fire itself, which completely engulfed one bedroom, was quickly brought under control thanks to the simultaneous deployment of a turntable ladder, a jet pipe from outside, and a team wearing breathing apparatus with another jet pipe inside the building.
Approximately 16 minutes after the fire department arrived, the fire was under control. However, the follow-up extinguishing work, search, and control of embers took about two more hours. All neighboring apartments and the attic were checked for the spread of fire. Several thermal imaging cameras and multi-gas detectors were used for this purpose.
The apartment where the fire broke out is uninhabitable for the foreseeable future and must be completely renovated. The residents are staying with family members for the time being.
The thermal insulation (ETICS) and the roof also suffered considerable damage. The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. No information can be provided about the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.
In addition to the fire department, three ambulances and several police patrol cars were also deployed.

21.03.2021 - Three injured in fire in Gonsenheim
Today, Sunday afternoon, at around 5 p.m., the fire department was called to a car fire in a backyard in Mainz-Gonsenheim. While en route, the fire department control center received further emergency calls reporting a building fire. Additional emergency personnel were then called to the scene. On site, several cars were burning in a driveway located between two residential buildings. The fire threatened to spread to both residential buildings. The windows on the ground floor had already shattered.
Three residents had fled from the building into the garden. The exit to the street was blocked. All three were injured, one of them seriously. They were led out of the courtyard by a team wearing breathing apparatus and fire escape hoods and handed over to the emergency services on site. All three were later taken to hospitals in Mainz. The resident of the neighboring building, which was also affected, had already been brought to safety from his apartment by attentive neighbors. He was uninjured.
Targeted firefighting by two teams wearing breathing apparatus working outside prevented the fire from spreading to the interior of the buildings. Foam had to be used to extinguish the fire in order to put out the fuels that had leaked and caught fire.
Ventilation measures were carried out in the neighboring building to remove the smoke from the building.
The fire department inspected the roof area of the building to which the driveway belongs. To do this, approximately 3m² of roof area had to be opened from the outside. The fire had spread to the roof insulation. No more embers could be found. The roof was then re-covered and part of it sealed with foil.
During the firefighting operations, traffic restrictions were imposed in the Mainzer Straße/Weser Straße area.
Two fire engines from the professional fire department, emergency services from the Mainz-Gonsenheim and Bretzenheim volunteer fire departments, the health section management and rescue service personnel, as well as the Mainz protective and criminal police were involved in the operation.
The criminal investigation department has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

24.03.2021 - Hazardous substance leak in daycare center
On March 24, 2021, at around 2:50 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department was called to a hazardous material spill at a municipal daycare center in Mainz-Bretzenheim. In a technical room, a small amount of nitric acid leaked from a defective canister for reasons that are still unclear. The fire department control center then alerted the appropriate number of fire trucks.
The fire department evacuated the daycare center and a team wearing breathing apparatus and chemical protection suits proceeded to eliminate the hazard. At the same time, the premises were ventilated with a positive pressure fan. The defective canister and contaminated items were packed up and taken outside. The remaining chemicals on the floor were absorbed using binding agents. Test tubes were used to measure the concentration of hazardous substances in the air in the daycare center. The danger zone was limited to the locked technical room – there was no danger to the children or staff at the daycare center.
The operation was completed after approximately two and a half hours. The Mainz-Bretzenheim Volunteer Fire Department manned Fire Station 1, which had been left unattended during the operation. The police and emergency medical services were also involved in the operation.
A specialist company will be called in to clean the floor before the daycare center reopens.

26.03.2021 - Attentive passers-by rescue woman from the Rhine
On March 26, 2021, a person was rescued from the Rhine at the customs port in Mainz. An alert resident noticed a person in the Rhine and immediately informed the emergency services. At the same time as the emergency call was made, four courageous passers-by secured the person on the riverbank. The crew of a pleasure boat on the Rhine also assisted in the rescue operation.
Upon arrival, the Mainz fire department took charge of the person and initiated the technical rescue. Due to the height difference caused by a quay wall (shore structure), the person was brought ashore using a ladder and a basket stretcher. They were then handed over to the emergency services for further treatment.
In addition to 10 members of the professional fire department, police and emergency medical services were also on the scene.
