08.11.2021 - Technical rescue after a traffic accident
At around 11 a.m. today, a traffic accident occurred between a car and a truck on Ludwig-Erhardt-Straße in Mainz-Hechtsheim. The car was thrown into the grass verge and both occupants were injured. Due to his injuries, the driver of the car had to be freed from his vehicle by the fire department using technical equipment.

10.11.2021 - Expansion joint fire on the university campus
On Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at around 4:30 p.m., a fire broke out in an expansion joint between two parts of the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry building on the Johannes Gutenberg University campus, presumably as a result of construction work. The affected part of the building was adjacent to the TRIGA Mark II research reactor complex.
When the fire department arrived, the reactor was in a state of rest and the building had already been evacuated. Parallel to the exploration of the roof area and the interior rooms, an extinguishing operation was prepared via the turntable ladder on the roof of the building. The fire department used water with an extinguishing agent additive to extinguish the fire in the expansion joint. The fire site was then checked using several thermal imaging cameras.
The reactor did not come into contact with fire or extinguishing water, so there was no danger at any time. Due to the special nature of the building, the scene of the fire is being monitored by a fire watch.
In addition to the fire department, the rescue service and the police were also on duty.

11.11.2021 - Failure of the emergency call lines
This morning, there was a widespread failure of the emergency lines 112, 110, and 19222. The Mainz fire department control center then alerted all volunteer fire departments in the city of Mainz and the districts of Mainz-Bingen and Alzey-Worms. They manned the fire stations to take emergency calls from citizens and forward them to the control centers. Corresponding warning messages were issued via the warning apps and radio stations.
Off-duty personnel were alerted to help with the high coordination effort required at the fire department control center.
According to Telekom, all lines in the Mainz control center area are now working again.

13.11.2021 - Successful search for an 85-year-old man in the Gonsenheim forest
Early on Saturday morning at around 4:00 a.m., a disoriented male called the police emergency number and reported that he had fallen off his bike and no longer knew where he was. Based on his description, he was initially believed to be on the Hessian side of the Maaraue area beyond the Theodor Heuss Bridge. Emergency services from the Hessian police and the Wiesbaden fire department were then alerted to search for the person.
A short time later, the man called the Mainz fire department control center via the 112 emergency number. Since the description of his presumed location was inconclusive, a cell phone location search was initiated. As a result, his location was presumed to be between Gonsenheimer Wald and Mainzer Sand, near the A 643 motorway. The fire department control center then alerted the professional fire department and the Gonsenheim volunteer fire department, as well as a special drone unit from the Bodenheim|Nackenheim fire department.
A joint command center was set up on site by the police and fire department to coordinate the emergency services. The rescue dog unit of the Maltese Relief Service (MHD) Mainz was then called in to support the search efforts in the forest. Several fire department teams searched the forest area with thermal imaging cameras and spotlights, while police forces supported the search and drove along the forest roads in the search area. The drone unit deployed a drone with a thermal imaging camera and search spotlight. At the same time, the police on site carried out a targeted search for the man's cell phone.
This search was ultimately successful and the person was found by the police at around 7:00 a.m. The 85-year-old was handed over to the emergency services for further examination and treatment with suspected hypothermia. According to his own statements, he had been out cycling since Friday afternoon.

27.11.2021 - Person trapped under bus and fatally injured
The Mainz Fire Department was called to a traffic accident involving a person trapped under a bus at the intersection of Schillerstraße and Kleine Langgasse at around 3:45 p.m. today.
When the fire department arrived, one person was lying under the bus. Since the person was inaccessible to the emergency medical services, the fire department lifted the bus using lifting bags and pulled the person out from under the bus. However, the emergency doctor could only confirm that the person had died.
As there were many people in the area at the time, mobile privacy screens were set up. Together with the emergency medical services and the emergency counselors who arrived later in the course of the operation, the bus driver and eyewitnesses to the accident were also cared for.
Schillerstraße was completely closed for the emergency response, causing severe traffic disruptions.
The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
In addition to the fire department, the police were on the scene with several patrol cars, the emergency medical services with several ambulances and an emergency doctor's vehicle, and the emergency pastoral care team. In addition to the professional fire department, the Mainz-Stadt volunteer fire department was also alerted, but their deployment was no longer necessary.

28.11.2021 - Fire in the new town of Mainz
The Mainz Professional Fire Department, along with the Mainz-Stadt Volunteer Fire Department, was alerted to a fire on Leibnizstraße in Mainz’s Neustadt district this Sunday afternoon at 3:51 p.m.
Heavy smoke was already visible over the Neustadt district as the first responders were en route. Subsequently, the fire department received numerous emergency calls. On site, a vehicle was burning in a garage in the backyard. The fire had already spread to a backyard structure attached to the garage. The structures spanned several buildings on Leibnizstraße. As the fire threatened to spread to several residential buildings, the first responders raised the alarm level and called in additional personnel from both fire stations of the professional fire department, as well as the Mainz-Weisenau Volunteer Fire Department.
Using four C-hoses and 15 breathing apparatus units, the firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading and extinguish it. The residents of the threatened buildings were able to evacuate on their own before the fire department arrived, and none were injured. They were temporarily housed in a Mainzer Mobilität bus for the duration of the firefighting operations but were all able to return to their apartments once the operation was over.
Due to the construction of the backyard buildings—which were largely clad in wood—extensive mop-up operations were necessary, lasting into the early evening. During this time, the unstaffed fire stations were manned by the volunteer fire departments of Mainz-Mombach, Mainz-Bretzenheim, and Mainz-Marienborn.

29.11.2021 - Accident at work on a construction site Am Rodelberg
This Monday morning at around 7:30 a.m., an accident occurred at a construction site on Am Rodelberg. Two construction workers fell from the third floor to the ground floor in an elevator shaft in a building shell. They were seriously injured. One construction worker was brought outside by colleagues before the emergency services arrived, while the other remained in the elevator shaft.
The fire department arrived at the same time as the emergency medical services and supported the emergency medical personnel with two teams in providing first aid and caring for the patients.
After providing emergency medical treatment, the fire department assisted the emergency medical services in transporting the injured to the ambulances, which then took them to hospitals in Mainz. The cause of the accident is unclear at this time.
In addition to the fire department, two police patrol cars, three ambulances, and two emergency doctor vehicles were deployed. The trade inspectorate was called in.
