02.11.2023 - Traffic accident with streetcar ends mildly
On Thursday afternoon, several emergency calls were received by the fire department control center in Mainz reporting that a person had been hit by a tram. The relevant personnel from both fire stations, the emergency medical services, and the police were immediately alerted and dispatched to Mainz-Gonsenheim.
On site, a person lying between the platform and the tram was already being attended to by the police. Fortunately, the person was not trapped under the tram, so the rescue could be carried out quickly in cooperation with the emergency medical services. The person escaped the accident with a few scrapes, but was taken to a hospital for further examination.
Due to the large number of onlookers, the fire department set up mobile privacy screens. During the rescue operation and accident investigation, there were restrictions on the tram network.
10.11.2023 - Vehicle fire in underground parking garage
On Thursday evening at around 9:20 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department was called to a vehicle fire in an underground parking garage on Nelkenstraße in Mainz-Finthen. Based on this information, a large number of emergency personnel were dispatched by the fire department control center.
When the first responders arrived, thick black smoke was billowing from the exhaust vents and the entrance to the underground car park. Firefighting operations were initiated via two access points. Using thermal imaging cameras, the crews were able to locate a burning car. A total of five crews from the Mainz professional fire department and the Mainz-Finthen volunteer fire department were deployed with breathing apparatus to extinguish the burning vehicle. The fire was quickly localized and extinguished.
No one was injured. Fortunately, as the underground car park has no access to the adjacent apartment building, the smoke was confined to the underground car park. Finally, the underground car park was ventilated and the scene was handed over to the police, who have launched an investigation into the cause and extent of the damage. The underground car park is unusable until further notice.
In addition to the Mainz professional fire department with personnel from fire stations 1 and 2 and the Mainz-Finten volunteer fire department, the rescue service, the police, and the Mainz power grid department were also involved in the operation, with a total of approximately 40 personnel.
18.11.2023 - Kitchen fire in Mainz-Bretzenheim - Fire brigade rescues two people
On Saturday morning at around 10:17 a.m., residents of an apartment building reported a kitchen fire on Essenheimer Straße in Mainz-Bretzenheim.
Based on this report, the fire department control center alerted a firefighting unit from the professional fire department and the Mainz-Bretzenheim volunteer fire department with the alarm code "apartment fire – kitchen fire."
In an apartment building, the kitchen of a ground floor apartment was fully engulfed in flames. Fortunately, it quickly became clear that no one was left in the apartment where the fire had broken out. The two residents of the apartment were able to leave the apartment in time, but were taken to a hospital in Mainz due to suspected smoke inhalation.
While a team wearing heavy breathing apparatus began fighting the fire, the stairwell and the first and second floors (attic) of the apartment building were searched for other people. Two people who were still in their apartment on the first floor were rescued by another team via the stairwell. No other people were in the building.
The fire in the kitchen was quickly brought under control. After the "fire out" report, extensive follow-up extinguishing work was carried out. The apartment where the fire had broken out was then mechanically ventilated and measurements were taken on all floors using a multi-gas detector.
Due to the fact that the kitchen door was closed by the residents before they left the apartment and that the fire could be fought via the terrace access, the spread of smoke to other rooms and thus the overall damage to the apartment could be kept to a minimum.
The fire department's operation was completed after about two hours. The apartment is uninhabitable due to the fire. The fire department cannot provide any information about the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.
In addition to the Mainz fire department with a total of 30 personnel, the rescue service with two vehicles and the police with one vehicle were also involved in the operation.
18.11.2023 - Gas leak in the old town of Mainz
Shortly after 3 p.m., the Mainz fire department was alerted to a gas odor in Große Bleiche, near Neubrunnenplatz.
The caller reported a gas odor at the height of an apparently vacant building. The measuring devices of the fire department and the gas supplier, which had also been alerted, confirmed the perception and were able to measure gas.
The entrance door was forced open to gain access to the building. Due to the high gas concentration, there was a risk of explosion and heavy breathing apparatus had to be used. The main gas valve was closed, stopping any further gas leaks.
Extensive ventilation measures were subsequently necessary, meaning that Große Bleiche had to be closed to traffic for around two hours. Pedestrians also had to use the opposite sidewalk.
Despite numerous positive examples, there were unfortunately also situations in which the cordon was ignored. As a result, the cordoned-off area had to be enlarged.
No information can currently be provided about the cause of the damage.

24.11.2023 - Fire in basement apartment ends mildly
The Mainz fire department was alerted at around 5:00 p.m. by an observant neighbor in the Mombach district. The caller reported smoke coming from a basement apartment. A strong smell of burning and soot-covered windows in the basement area confirmed the situation when the fire department arrived.
As it was initially unclear whether the resident was still in the apartment, the front door was immediately forced open. A team wearing heavy breathing apparatus was able to search the apartment and fortunately give the all-clear – there was no one left in the apartment. Firefighting operations could then begin in the kitchen area. During this work, additional teams stood by outside to provide support.
The fire was quickly brought under control and the "all clear" was given shortly thereafter. The building was then ventilated and the last remnants of the fire were removed from the apartment.
The operation was completed after about 1.5 hours. In addition to the professional fire department from stations 1 and 2, the rescue service and the police were also on site.
29.11.2023 - Apartment fire claims one life
On Wednesday evening at around 10:00 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department was initially alerted to a smoke alarm that had been triggered in Mainz-Weisenau. While en route, the fire department control center upgraded the alarm code to a residential fire due to further reports.
Upon arrival at the scene, smoke was coming from the balcony and a window of the affected apartment. Firefighting and inspection of the apartment were initiated immediately. At this point, it was not yet known whether there were still people in the apartment. The fire was quickly extinguished. Tragically, the emergency services discovered that it was too late to help one person. This person died in the apartment.
Additional personnel checked the stairwell and the other floors. Apart from the apartment where the fire broke out, there was no further damage to the apartment building. Finally, the entire apartment was ventilated and the power was turned off.
In addition to the professional fire department with personnel from fire stations 1 and 2 and the Mainz-Weisenau volunteer fire department, the rescue service and the police were also on site with several personnel. The fire department cannot provide any information about the cause of the fire. The police have launched an investigation.
