In the early evening hours, a fire broke out in the basement of a terraced house in Mainz-Laubenheim. At around 5:30 p.m., the fire department control center received a call via the emergency number 112 reporting smoke in the basement area. The residents of the building, who made the emergency call themselves, were instructed by the fire department dispatcher to go outside and direct the fire department to the scene. The fire department control center then alerted the Mainz fire department, which arrived at the reported address shortly thereafter.
A team wearing breathing apparatus was able to quickly locate the source of the fire in the basement area and extinguish it. Parts of the basement equipment then had to be dismantled to rule out further pockets of fire. Thanks to the beeping home smoke detectors, the residents were able to leave the house in good time. Fortunately, this meant that only the basement rooms were damaged.
The exact cause of the fire was not yet clear at the end of the operation. The criminal investigation department has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. In addition to the fire department, the rescue service and the Mainz police were also on duty.
