Drais volunteer fire department

Logo of the Drais volunteer fire department.

The Drais Volunteer Fire Department supports the Mainz Professional Fire Department mainly in the Drais and Lerchenberg districts, but also in other areas of Mainz when needed.

In addition to emergency response, they engage in youth work and also perform cultural tasks in Drais, whether through the fire department band or at events and festivals.

As part of hazard prevention, they operate the CBRN reconnaissance vehicle (a federal measuring vehicle for the detection/identification of nuclear, biological, and chemical substances).

Fire department band

The Drais Volunteer Fire Department Band was founded in 1956 and currently consists of about 35 musicians ranging in age from 16 to 70.

The repertoire covers the entire spectrum of brass band music, ranging from classical marches, polkas, and waltzes to concert pieces of all styles, as well as well-known adaptations of film and pop music. The band performs at religious and secular events in Drais, the Mainz metropolitan area, and throughout Rheinhessen.

Support association

The Friends Association supports the individual units of the Drais Volunteer Fire Department, primarily through financial assistance. Funds from the association are used to purchase equipment that goes beyond the legally required minimum. This allows for additional protection for emergency responders, the purchase of sheet music or instruments for the marching band, and support for youth programs, such as field trips.
