The Gonsenheim Volunteer Fire Department has been in existence since 1888. It consists of many active firefighters who play a vital role in fire safety in Gonsenheim through numerous drills and emergency responses. To ensure this remains the case in the future, the department places great emphasis on recruiting new members.

The department has had its own band since 1927: The wind orchestra, with its musicians, performs approximately 30 shows each year in and around Mainz. In addition to a youth wind orchestra, the department also offers music education (instrumental lessons and early music education).

Fire department band

The Fire Department Band has been in existence since 1927. The wind ensemble performs at religious and secular events such as processions, pilgrimages, the Strawberry Festival, and the Park Festival. Special highlights include the summer concert at the Strawberry Festival and the church music concert on the third Sunday of Advent.

They’re also in action during Carnival—as is to be expected in Mainz—under the banner of the Füsilier-Garde 1953 e.V., accompanying not only the Rose Monday parade but also the Gonsenheim parade and the parade of the guards. For the past 12 years, the musicians have also opened the Mainz Oktoberfest.

Support association

Founded in 1990, the Friends of the Mainz-Gonsenheim Fire Department Association (Freunde der Feuerwehr Mainz-Gonsenheim e.V.) provides both moral and material support to the volunteer fire department. Through a variety of events, such as Fire Department Day or performances by the Gonsenheim Volunteer Fire Department’s wind orchestra, the association seeks to raise funds, which are then put to good use in the various areas of the association.

In addition to the active fire department, these areas include the youth fire department, the brass band, the youth orchestra, and early music education.
