Yes, existing heating systems may generally continue to be used. If a new heating system is installed, the requirements of the Building Modernization Act (GModG) will apply as of July 29, 2026. The previous general 65-percent requirement has been eliminated.
Under certain conditions, the GModG permits various heating technologies. In principle, gas, heating oil, and propane heating systems may continue to be installed. However, for systems newly installed after July 29, 2026, requirements regarding the proportion of certain climate-friendly fuels will gradually increase starting in 2029. For new gas, heating oil, and liquefied petroleum gas heating systems, the following minimum proportions of climate-friendly fuels generally apply: 10 percent starting in 2029, 15 percent starting in 2030, 30 percent starting in 2035, and 60 percent starting in 2040.
