Advisory Campaign on Building Renovation in the Mainz-Ebersheim Neighborhood
Steinkrüger, Head of the Environmental Department: “We offer free consultations with experts who can assess and evaluate building renovations of any scale.”
The coordinated building renovation campaign currently underway in Mainz-Ebersheim under the slogan “Ebersheim Does the Renovation Check!” is an initiative under the “100% Climate Protection Master Plan.” The launch of the renovation campaign was already decided upon, initiated, and successfully implemented in 2025.
Part two of the renovation campaign is now getting underway under the title “Neighborhood Advisory Campaign”—and is launching, as a pilot, in the Mainz-Ebersheim neighborhood. Here, the state capital of Mainz is offering owners of single-family and two-family homes in the area free energy consultations as well as expert presentations at the kickoff event on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. in the Töngeshalle. The energy consultations will be available from September 17 through December 4, 2026.
Janina Steinkrüger, Director of Environmental Affairs: “With the campaign in Ebersheim, we are combining the goals of offering low-threshold, free consultations in the neighborhood while also leveraging the power of community. We want to encourage those who have been considering an energy consultation for some time and, at the same time, alleviate any concerns they may have. Offering assistance from experts who can assess and evaluate every aspect of a building renovation project is the most effective approach.”
Expertise Helps—Experts Provide Free Advice
Energy-efficient building renovation is generally a complex undertaking and should be carefully planned and implemented with the input of experts.
To provide interested Mainz residents with guidance, tips, and resources to help them take these steps, the state capital of Mainz launched an information and advisory campaign on energy-efficient building renovation in 2025, which has since been completed.
With the Mainz-Ebersheim pilot project, the advisory campaign is now moving into the concrete implementation phase on the ground in the city’s neighborhoods. The campaign is funded by the “Mainz Foundation for Climate Protection and Energy Efficiency” and is intended to help promote renovation activities in Mainz as a whole.
“Free consultations help overcome barriers”
At the press conference, District Chair Annette Odenweller expressed her gratitude that the campaign launch is taking place in Ebersheim: “This sends a strong signal to many residents in Ebersheim. Quite a few homeowners are likely considering energy-efficient renovations for their properties—or at least having the need assessed. In this context, the offer of free consultations by certified experts is extremely helpful in overcoming hesitations. I hope to see strong interest in my neighborhood.”
In early September 2026, the public awareness campaign will kick off with posters and flyers in the Ebersheim neighborhood. In addition, an informational letter will be distributed to all Ebersheim residents. The neighborhood consultation campaign will kick off with an information evening on Wednesday, September 16, starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Töngeshalle (Schulrat-Spang-Straße 8, 55129 Mainz), with the participation of the neighborhood council chair.
“During the evening event, interested Ebersheim residents will receive helpful information about the campaign, the energy consultation process, and the registration procedure, and will have the opportunity to meet the participating energy efficiency experts. Anyone who wishes to do so can also schedule their first consultation appointments right then and there,” emphasizes Janina Steinkrüger, head of the Environment Department. At the heart of the campaign in the neighborhood is the consultation phase in Ebersheim, which takes place in the homes of interested residents “on-site” and runs from September 17 through December 4. A total of up to 100 free consultations will be offered. The target group consists of owners of single-family and two-family homes in the neighborhood.
The initial energy consultation is designed to help this group assess the condition of their own buildings in terms of energy efficiency, identify potential improvements, and determine the feasibility of implementing them. The energy consultations will be conducted by energy efficiency experts from the agency “Effizienz:Klasse GmbH” in Darmstadt.
To receive a free initial energy consultation, interested parties must first register with the City of Mainz (www.mainz.de/sanierungscheck (opens in a new tab)).
An initial energy consultation follows this process:
- The 60-minute consultation takes place at the client's home—at the property itself.
- The energy efficiency expert tours the property with the residents (from the basement to the attic, or vice versa) and explains potential energy-related weaknesses.
- Explanation of possible improvement measures.
- These recommendations are documented in a consultation report, which is provided to the homeowners at the end of the consultation.
- The energy efficiency expert outlines possible steps, such as creating a customized renovation roadmap.
- Naturally, questions can be asked throughout the consultation.
Next Steps:
About one year after this consultation phase—starting in December 2027—those who received the consultation will be contacted again and asked to complete an online questionnaire (voluntarily and anonymously). The survey results are intended to help evaluate the campaign’s effectiveness and identify further support needs.
