Rainwater for the garden
Environmental tip from the Mainzer Umweltladen
Especially during prolonged dry spells in Mainz and Rheinhessen, it is becoming increasingly important to return rainwater to the local natural water cycle or to collect and use it in a timely manner. Direct infiltration not only helps replenish groundwater, but also reduces the strain on the sewer system and the wastewater treatment plant. Those who also use rainwater to water their gardens save drinking water and help their plants thrive.
Many properties have concrete, asphalt, and paved areas that are no longer necessary. These might include an unused parking space, paved and sealed front yards, or completely sealed courtyards. These areas can be relatively easily redesigned to allow rainwater to infiltrate again.
Good floor coverings for infiltration
If, for example, you are planning to redesign a parking space that is no longer in use, it is important to consider a few basic points regarding the new surface. Depending on how the space will be used later and how much maintenance you can handle, different systems may be suitable.
Here we present the most common ones:
- Lawn
These areas consist of compacted topsoil with hard-wearing grasses. Lawns are generally easy and inexpensive to create. They are particularly suitable as play and exercise areas, but require a lot of maintenance. - Gravel or
grit surfaces Gravel or grit comes in a wide variety of sizes and colors, offering great design flexibility. This surface is suitable for parking spaces, footpaths, driveways, and terraces. If honeycomb is also used as a base, maintenance is minimal. - Gravel lawn
This surface consists of a compacted mixture of gravel and topsoil covered with grass. It is well suited for play areas, courtyards, footpaths, and driveways. These surfaces require less maintenance than lawns. - Wooden grating
This slightly more expensive surface covering consists of impregnated wood (e.g., larch, robinia). It must be laid on a well-drained surface and is particularly suitable for terraces. There may be a risk of slipping when wet. - Wooden paving Here,
too, impregnated wood is used, laid on a well-drained base and filled with sand or gravel. This can be used to create attractive terraces and footpaths. However, the lifespan of the wood used is limited and there is a risk of slipping in wet conditions. - Lawn grid stones and lawn honeycombs
Both substrates are significantly more resilient than traditional lawns and are particularly suitable for parking spaces and driveways. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to lay, and maintenance costs are kept to a minimum. - Lawn
joint paving Concrete blocks are fitted with molded spacers to ensure evenly spaced green joints. This type of paving is particularly suitable for parking spaces and driveways. It requires little maintenance but is slightly more expensive as it is not suitable for DIY installation. - Porous paving
Large-pored, water-permeable concrete blocks are now available in many different designs. They are very suitable for terraces, footpaths, or courtyards and require little maintenance. As they should be laid by a professional, these pavements are expensive.
