01.02.2021 - Room fire in the old town
During the night from Sunday to Monday, a room fire broke out in a residential building in Mainz's old town. Alert neighbors heard the smoke alarm, called emergency services, and alerted the resident by knocking and ringing the doorbell. By the time the fire department arrived, the resident had already made her way to the ground floor with the help of other residents and was able to be treated there by emergency medical services. As a precaution, she was transported to a hospital in Mainz.
The fire was quickly extinguished. Nevertheless, the affected apartment is initially uninhabitable. However, the other residents were all able to return to their apartments after the operation was completed.
The criminal investigation department has begun investigating the cause of the fire.
The Mainz fire department would like to thank the attentive neighbors for their exemplary behavior. It is thanks to them that the outcome was relatively minor.

02.02.2021 - Eventful morning for the Mainz fire department
During the course of the morning, the fire department was called to several incidents in the city. At 10:05 a.m., the fire department was initially called to deal with leaking fuel following a traffic accident between an MVG bus and a car. On site, they found a major accident with eight injured people and seven damaged cars. The fire department provided first aid to several of the injured and carried out other safety measures. Due to the large number of injured people, in addition to the fire department, the health section management with the senior emergency doctor and organizational manager, a rapid response team from Johanniter Unfallhilfe, and the police with several patrol cars were also on site.
Shortly after completing this operation, the fire department was called to a chimney fire in Ebersheim at 10:55 a.m. Professional and volunteer firefighters drove to the scene and were able to give the all-clear after a brief investigation: a wood-burning stove had been lit in the basement of the house, but there was no chimney fire.
At the same time as the operation in Ebersheim, the fire department received a report of a burning vehicle on Erzbergerstraße at 11:06 a.m. This operation was handled by another fire engine, which was quickly manned by personnel from Fire Station 2. Fortunately, the report of a burning vehicle was not confirmed. The fire department's work was limited to securing the accident site and disconnecting the vehicle battery.
At 11:58 a.m., the firefighting unit from Fire Station 2 and the rescue fire engine from Fire Station 1 were alerted by the automatic fire alarm system at the Gonsenheim special education facility. Fortunately, the fire alarm was triggered only by burnt food. The resident of an apartment had forgotten to remove his food from the stove. No one was injured.
Almost simultaneously, at 11:59 a.m., the small alarm vehicle was alerted to leaking operating fluids at a company depot on Am Hemel. A vehicle had lost hydraulic oil there. This operation was carried out in cooperation with the lower water authority, the Mainz Environmental Agency.
On the way back from the BMA call in Gonsenheim, the units from fire stations 1 and 2 were called to an industrial accident on Wormser Straße. Here, a forklift truck had fallen over while being loaded onto a flatbed truck. When the alarm was raised, it was assumed that the driver of the forklift truck was trapped under the vehicle. When the fire department arrived, the forklift driver was already being treated by the emergency medical services. The fire department personnel collected the spilled fuel and engine oil. The police commissioned a specialist company to clean the road properly. During the operation and the cleaning work, there were considerable traffic disruptions in the Wormser Straße area.

03.02.2021 - Eventful afternoon for the fire department
This Thursday afternoon, the Mainz Fire Department responded to several water damage incidents:
1:16 p.m. Flooded road and flooded basements on Wormser Straße
At around 2:15 p.m., several callers reported severe flooding on Wormser Straße at the corner of Hohlstraße. The road there was flooded up to 0.5 meters at times. Basements in several adjacent buildings were flooded. In some cases, there was up to 1.5 m of water in the basements. Emergency services from the professional fire department and the Weisenau volunteer fire department were called to the scene and used their pumps to try to clear the sewer drains. Mainz municipal utilities were also on site and cleaned the sewer drains. Fire department personnel are currently (5 p.m.) still on duty. Personnel
deployed: 14 officers from the professional fire department and 14 personnel from the Weisenau volunteer fire department with a total of 5 vehicles
1:23 p.m. Water in basement, Kreißigstraße
A large amount of water in the basement required the fire department to be called out. They pumped out the basement with two submersible pumps. Personnel
deployed: Four officers from the fire department with two vehicles
2:16 p.m. Water in basement, Wallaustraße 101 The basement
here was also flooded. The water was around 1.2 m high over an area of 150-200 sqm. The fire department was deployed here with a larger force and several submersible pumps. In the course of the measures, the fire department also had to force open several doors to gain access to all areas. The operation here was completed at around 5 p.m. Forces
deployed: 9 BF officers and 12 FF Weisenau emergency personnel with a total of 5 vehicles
2:21 p.m. Water in basement, Wallaustraße 42 The water
was nearly 30 cm deep over an area of approximately 70 square meters. Several submersible pumps from the fire department were also used here. Forces
deployed: 6 officers from the professional fire department with 1 fire engine
2:46 p.m. Fallen tree, outskirts of Ebersheim
A tree approximately 12 meters tall fell onto a dirt road. The Ebersheim fire department removed the tree and secured other trees that were also in danger of falling due to the heavily saturated ground. Forces

15.02.2021 - Accident between Smart car and streetcar is minor
On Rosenmontag, at approximately 7:10 a.m., an accident occurred between a Smart car and the Mainzelbahn. At the intersection of Haifa-Allee and Mercedesstraße, the two vehicles collided; the Smart was “pushed” off the road, broke through a fence, and came to a stop with half of it on the oncoming lane of the tram tracks and a sidewalk.
The 85-year-old driver of the Smart sustained a laceration to the head and whiplash. No other injuries were apparent. The injured man was transported to a hospital by ambulance.
At the time of the accident, the tram was carrying the driver and five passengers. All six people were uninjured.
Since the exact location of the incident was still unclear at the time of the report, the alarm was triggered using the code “H3 Major Traffic Accident – Tram.” This alerted personnel from both stations of the professional fire department, the Bretzenheim Volunteer Fire Department, and several ambulances. Ultimately, only personnel from Fire Station 1 and two ambulances were deployed.
The fire department attended to the injured person until the arrival of emergency medical services, secured the accident scene, and later disconnected the battery of the Smart car.
The closure of the entire intersection and the resulting backup of several trams caused disruptions to road traffic and to Maizer Mobilität services.
In addition to the fire department and emergency medical services, the police and Mainzer Mobilität were also on the scene.

17.02.2021 - Basement fire in Mainz-Weisenau
This Wednesday morning at around 9 a.m., a fire broke out in the basement of a semi-detached house in the Weisenau district. When the emergency services arrived, thick smoke was already billowing out of the building's openings. Inside the building, the smoke had already spread through the stairwell to all floors of the property. The residents of the building, who had been warned by the installed home smoke detectors, had already made their way outside.
Due to the massive smoke development and the enormous heat in the basement, it was initially not possible for the firefighters wearing breathing apparatus to enter the building. Targeted technical ventilation accelerated the removal of smoke and heat, enabling several teams to carry out targeted firefighting operations inside the building. Further smoke spread and the fire spreading to the entire property were prevented by targeted measures. At the same time, the neighboring semi-detached house was checked for possible smoke ingress. Due to a CO concentration detected by measurements inside the neighboring property, the resident was handed over to the emergency services present for examination.
In consultation with the criminal investigation department present, fixtures and furniture in the basement were laboriously removed so that all embers could be extinguished. The firefighting operations were completed at around 12 noon, and a post-fire inspection was carried out this afternoon.
Two firefighting units from the professional fire department, emergency personnel from the Mainz-Weisenau volunteer fire department, emergency medical services, and the Mainz police and criminal investigation department were involved in the operation. The criminal investigation department has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
In this context, the Mainz fire department once again points out the effectiveness of the legally required home smoke detectors in residential buildings.

17.02.2021 - Person rescued from the Rhine
On the afternoon of February 17, 2021, at around 5:30 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department was called to a water rescue on the Rhine. According to the caller, a person was in the Rhine near Feldbergplatz and was holding on to the embankment wall. This report was confirmed at the scene. A person was clinging to the embankment wall with their last ounce of strength and was already being secured as best as possible by police officers and the crew of the Mainz Fire Department's first-response vehicle. As this was very difficult due to the height between the edge of the bank and the water surface, and the person's strength was visibly dwindling, a fire department officer, secured by a rope and a life jacket, climbed into the water to the person and secured them from there.
This decision proved to be entirely correct, as the person lost all strength shortly afterwards. A short time later, a multi-purpose boat from the fire department arrived on site, onto which the person could finally be pulled. Immediately afterwards, they were handed over to the emergency services and transported to a hospital.
Thanks to the quick and prudent intervention of the police and fire department, especially the courageous entry into the water by the fire department officer, the person was quickly rescued from the water.

22.02.2021 - Fire in a car repair shop in Mainz-Mombach
Today, Monday, at 5:59 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department control center received an emergency call reporting a fire in a car repair shop in Mainz-Mombach. The control center then alerted the Mainz Fire Department.
When the first responders arrived, the employees had already left the building. Thick black smoke was billowing from an open garage door.
The fire had broken out in the rear of the workshop and had spread through the exhaust system of a paint booth in the building.
The fire department immediately deployed two teams wearing breathing apparatus to fight the fire inside the workshop hall. Other teams wearing breathing apparatus checked the directly adjacent apartment and the paint booth. The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished using two C-hoses. This prevented it from spreading to the neighboring residential building and the company apartment.
The workshop employees were handed over to the emergency services for treatment. The Mainz public utility company's fault clearance service disconnected the building from the power supply after the firefighting work was completed.
The criminal investigation department has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. No information can yet be provided on the extent of the damage.
In addition to the fire department, the following were also on site: the emergency services with several ambulances, the health department, the police with several patrol cars, the criminal investigation department, and the Mainz public utility company's fault clearance service.
