With your ID card, you receive an electronic form of identification, known as the “online ID.” This allows you to verify your identity online if you are 16 years of age or older.
Along with your ID card, you’ll receive a secret code, known as a one-time PIN. You can use this to set a personal, six-digit identification number (PIN). Along with the one-time PIN, you’ll receive your unlock code (PUK).
This also applies to:
- the electronic residence permit (eAT)
- the EU Citizen Card (eID)
You’ll need a new PIN if:
- you have forgotten or misplaced your PIN
- the PIN has been locked after three incorrect attempts and you no longer have the PUK
- the PIN has fallen into the hands of others
If you still have your PIN but would like a new sequence of numbers, you can change the PIN as often as you like using the appropriate software, such as the AusweisApp. To do this, first enter your current PIN and then enter your newly chosen PIN twice.
The PIN reset service for the electronic ID card is available again. You can use this service to obtain a new PIN. You can access this service via the link under "Forms, Information Sheets, Links."
You can reset your PIN in person at your local ID card office or immigration office.
- Make an appointment with the relevant office, where you will receive a new PIN free of charge, which you can then change to your own six-digit number.
There is no established procedure for this service.
