Less than 20 percent of the sewage sludge incinerated here comes from Mainz. The rest is transported by truck to the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate. How can this be considered environmentally friendly?

Well, all sewage sludge that is now incinerated here had to be transported to an incineration plant beforehand – including the sewage sludge from Mainz. Because most of it had to be transported over much greater distances, the average transport distance was reduced from around 220 kilometers to less than 70 kilometers. This in turn saves over 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year. We actually call that environmental protection.
