EU funding
"A confirmation of the entire project"
Knowing that our project is right and important is one thing. Having it confirmed by an independent party is another. On July 2, 2018, Rhineland-Palatinate Environment Minister Ulrike Höfken presented us with a grant notification from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
It certifies that the plant, as we planned it, operates in an energy-efficient manner and helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and is therefore receiving €5,000,000 in funding from the EU. "In addition to the financial aspect, this is above all a confirmation of the entire project," said Jeanette Wetterling, chairwoman of the TVM shareholders' meeting, who was delighted with the news.
Ulrike Höfken, Minister for the Environment, Energy, Food and Forestry of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate
With an outstanding carbon footprint—because it saves more CO2 than it emits—TVM is doing pioneering work with its new mono-sludge incineration plant and making a key contribution to the energy transition and climate protection: It will save around 26,000 tons of carbon dioxide, supply surplus heat to around 4,000 households, and contribute to long-term waste disposal security for the entire region. This is because the plant will recycle sewage sludge from the Mainz and Kaiserslautern sewage treatment plants, the 'Untere Selz' wastewater association, and other municipal sewage treatment plants within a radius of around 100 kilometers. This makes the energy-self-sufficient sewage sludge incineration plant unique in Rhineland-Palatinate."
Dr. Susanne Wimmer-Leonhardt Mayor and responsible department head of the City of Kaiserslautern
The joint project "Thermal Utilization Mainz" is regarded by experts and local authorities in Rhineland-Palatinate as an important building block in eliminating current and future bottlenecks in sewage sludge disposal. The construction of the mono-sewage sludge incineration plant will not only create a central pillar of the future disposal route for parts of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. A decisive factor for the funding is the model character of the plant technology used here in terms of the use of CO2-neutral and energy-efficient technologies."
Dr. Oliver Franz Mayor of the State Capital of Wiesbaden and responsible department head
"The financial support provided by the European Union for Thermische Verwertung Mainz confirms our decision to invest in TVM GmbH through the waste management companies of the state capital of Wiesbaden. As a neighboring municipality in particular, we are delighted that sewage sludge is being disposed of in an energy-efficient and CO2-neutral manner. Together with the short transport distances to Mainz and the guaranteed disposal security, Thermische Verwertung Mainz is an excellent example of intermunicipal cooperation."
Ralf Claus Lord Mayor of the City of Ingelheim am Rhein, Chairman of the "Untere Selz" Wastewater Association
"The political debate and legislative developments of recent years have shown that thermal sewage sludge treatment is the right way forward. As a shareholder in TVM, AVUS is pleased to have paved the way for long-term, secure, and cost-effective sewage sludge recycling with the construction of the sewage sludge incineration plant. Funding from the European Regional Development Fund is proof of the project's positive prospects and will support its implementation."
