Integrated development concept for Mainz city center

IEK 2015

The Integrated Development Concept for the City Center (IEK Innenstadt) defines the goals and areas of action for strengthening and developing Mainz's city center and describes the projects and measures necessary to achieve this.

The entire development process is documented on this platform. Here you can find out about the objectives, process structure, and opportunities for participation in the IEK City Center, as well as the current status of the process.

With the city council resolution of July 2015 in conjunction with the resolution on the prioritization and implementation periods of the projects and measures in May 2016, a development concept is now in place that will serve as a basis for discussion and decision-making for the public, city center stakeholders, and political bodies. On the other hand, it also represents the legal prerequisite for further funding within the framework of the federal-state program "Active City Centers."

Initial situation and objectives

The IEK Innenstadt (Mainz City Center) is intended to identify strategies for sustainable development and specify concrete planning proposals and binding priorities for subsequent implementation. The aim is to establish a framework for action for the structural development and urban design of Mainz city center for the next 10-15 years in order to secure and further develop the city's future viability in its role as a regional center and state capital.

Process structure

A working group has been commissioned to develop the integrated development concept, which will be drawn up jointly. Within the working group, the lead role is being played by the scheuvens + wachten office (Dortmund), which is being supported in terms of content in the area of retail by BBE Handelsberatung (Cologne) and in the area of transport by the Runge + Küchler office (Düsseldorf). The development of the integrated development concept for the urban design of Mainz city center is divided into a total of five phases.

Participation

The creation of the plan is not only about solving functional and design tasks, but also about communicating, informing, and actively involving stakeholders in inner-city development and the citizens of Mainz. Over a period of around one year, an intensive dialogue will be conducted with both experts (the relevant institutions from the fields of business, trade, transport, urban development, culture, and social affairs) and the citizens of Mainz.
