There are 44 schools operated by the state—specifically, by the School Board of the State Capital of Mainz—in the following school types
22 elementary schools, 4 “Realschule plus” schools, 7 high schools (including a school for the gifted at the Otto-Schott-Gymnasium), 4 integrated comprehensive schools, 3 special education schools with different areas of focus, and 4 vocational schools.
