Vineyards in Rheinhessen

Rheinhessen—Germany’s largest wine-growing region—lies southwest of Mainz. The vast vineyards and romantic wine-growing villages can be explored on foot or by bike. All of these towns are easily accessible by train or car and can be reached in an hour or less. In the summer, many wineries offer their wines and light meals on their grounds—known as “Straußwirtschaften.” Before the new harvest, numerous wine festivals entice visitors with the last of the previous year’s vintages. You’ll have a window with a view of Rheinhessen during a leisurely ride on the regional train from Mainz to Alzey and back!
