The Mainzers' favorite forest

A walk in the Lennebergwald forest in Mainz is a popular way to relax at any time of year.

Locals refer to the “Lenneberg Forest” as the “Gonsenheim Forest.” Either way, in Rheinhessen—a region that is certainly not blessed with forests—this approximately 700-hectare wooded area serves as an almost magical attraction and is arguably the most popular local recreational destination for the people of Mainz. This is evident simply from the number of annual visitors. There are around one million.

Walkers and hikers can enjoy a network of trails covering 70 km. The Gonsenheim Forest is also ideal terrain for joggers. And not just because of the ground, which is pleasant to run on even in wet weather thanks to its sandy subsoil. The flatness of the route, which has a significant incline of 35 meters at the "water tower," also invites inexperienced runners to go jogging.

The Lenneberg Forest differs greatly from most other forests in Germany. It is located in a dune area. The soil consists mainly of pure sand, which can store only small amounts of water and nutrients. This, together with the mild and dry climate of the Upper Rhine Valley, is the reason for the steppe vegetation, which is characterized by a large number of rare and, in some cases, endangered plants and animals.
