Twice France and back - "Reichsenden" in Mainz in 1798 and 1918

Note on the online exhibition

On March 7, 2024, a new online exhibition on the history of the city of Mainz was presented at the Mainz City History Museum.

Historical research in a modern format

Students and lecturers at the City History Museum
Together with Prof. Dr. Braun and Dr. Linsenmann, the students present their project at the City History Museum of the City of Mainz.

The exhibition is the result of two events held by the History Department at Johannes Gutenberg University in the summer semester of 2023 with students led by Prof. Dr. Bettina Braun and Dr. Andreas Linsenmann.

The Mainz City Archives actively supported the students in their research: after a general introduction to archival work, the students set out on their own to search for sources on their respective topics. In the process, they became familiar with the various holdings of the City Archives and also practiced reading old manuscripts. Last but not least, they came across many exciting image sources in the archives, which can now be admired in the digital exhibition.

"Légion de Mayence" as a re-enactment
History as reenactment: members of the "Légion de Mayence" association as French soldiers

The online exhibition is part of the project "Mainz Models for Digitally Enhanced Teaching and Learning (ModeLL-M)".

This means that anyone interested in history now has access to an exciting and well-illustrated contribution to the history of the city of Mainz, which presents and compares the upheavals of 1798 and 1918 in a novel way.
