Schneider-Schott Music Prize
The Mainz music publisher Heinz Schneider-Schott (1906-1988) donated capital to the state capital of Mainz in the mid-1980s to regularly award a music prize.
Since 1986, the state capital of Mainz has awarded the Schneider-Schott Music Prize every two years to composers, performers, or music ensembles in the field of classical music who are both deserving of support and in need of it. The prize, which is endowed with €15,000, focuses on contemporary serious music.
The right to nominate and select appropriately qualified musicians lies with an independent five-member jury of experts, chaired by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Rathert, musicologist at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. It is not possible to apply personally.
Following composer Benjamin Scheuer's recent win, the 2024 award goes to the Hamburg-based Ensemble Resonanz. Founded in 1994, the ensemble is now a recognized institution in German and international music life.
