Project funding
In addition to institutional funding for cultural institutions and initiatives, the state capital's cultural budget also includes funds to support individual projects by non-institutionally affiliated or private cultural creators. These project grants can be applied for at the Department of Culture. They are awarded on the basis of the grant applications received, taking into account the greatest possible diversity of content.
The amount of funding available for project support depends on the requirements of the respective biennial budget and may therefore vary between calendar years. The Department of Culture has continuously increased this approach within the scope of its possibilities.

Covid 19 pandemic
In order to at least partially offset the immediate economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for creative artists and at the same time enable cultural offerings to continue during the pandemic, the state capital of Mainz has also launched aid packages for culture. The Mainz Department of Culture has provided additional support to cultural workers and institutions on this basis, in addition to the regular funding opportunities: €165,285 in 2020, €121,485 in 2021, and €108,650 in 2022.
Application for project funding
Cultural professionals from Mainz who are planning and implementing projects in the state capital can submit an informal application for project funding to the Office for Culture and Libraries by email. The application must include a description of the project's content and theme, stating its connection to the state capital of Mainz, as well as a complete cost plan (comparison of planned income and expenditure, including shortfalls, own contribution, and information on funding from external sponsors) and should generally be submitted as early as possible. Short-term applications may be considered if they are submitted at least eight weeks before the event.
