Studio house Waggonfabrik

The state capital of Mainz awards these studios for a maximum of five years to young visual artists as well as professional and full-time artists in the state capital of Mainz who do not have their own studio.

The aim of the municipal art studios is to provide Mainz artists with space for their creative activities in order to promote the visual arts in Mainz and strengthen the cultural diversity of the state capital. The studio house is home to a variety of artistic disciplines, from painting, graphic design, and sculpture to photography, installation art, and video art. The work of the artists in the studio community is regularly presented twice a year during a public tour. In cooperation with the Department of Culture, additional exhibitions and artistic projects are also planned on a regular basis.

To the application

Vacant studio spaces are advertised publicly on the city's website so that all artists who meet the criteria are free to apply. A selection committee consisting of two representatives from the Department of Culture, including the Head of the Department of Culture, two representatives from the Municipal Advisory Board for Visual Arts (Art Advisory Board), and the spokesperson for the studio facility, awards the studio spaces. The studios are primarily allocated to young professional visual artists who live and work in the state capital of Mainz and are no older than 35 at the time of application. It is possible for studios to be allocated to visual artists who also work in art education and/or teaching to secure their livelihood.
