Neighborhood work
With the support of the Coordination Office for Open Senior Citizens' Work, the senior citizens' networks in Mainz organize suitable offers for older people in the district.
Neighborhood work
Care and support must not be viewed in isolation from the living environment and surroundings of senior citizens. Low-threshold support, care, and service offerings, as well as opportunities for information and participation in the neighborhood, expand the scope of action for the people living there. They strengthen personal responsibility and initiative. Being active and involved are also factors that have a preventive effect on health and well-being. At the same time, contact and interaction form the basis for informal assistance, which, in cases where help and care are needed, can usefully supplement or even delay the need for professional care services.
In 2015, the Institute for Social Pedagogical Research (ism) developed an action plan for the further development of open senior citizen work on behalf of the city of Mainz, which takes these interrelationships into account. The concept was developed with the participation of full-time and volunteer actors in the fields of support and care, contact and interaction, and older people as experts in their own right. The action plan forms the basis for the socio-spatial orientation of senior citizen work in Mainz.
Coordination office for open senior citizen work
A full-time coordinator from the city is overseeing the implementation of the action plan. The first step is to establish and support senior citizen networks in the individual districts. This brings together representatives from the care and support sector, housing and neighborhood projects, church associations, educational and community centers, leisure facilities, sports and cultural associations, and volunteers. They pool their knowledge, work together on projects, and pursue common goals. Tailored services are designed to enable older people to live happily and independently in their familiar surroundings for as long as possible.
The coordinator supports the networks in setting their goals, accompanies the groups in their coordination efforts, promotes participation processes, and helps with the implementation of projects. There is close cooperation with social planning, the "Active Aging" department, and the community nurses plus. This cooperation and coordination enables cross-district networking, so that resources can be better utilized and the results of the networks can reach a wider audience.
Interested citizens are cordially invited to get to know the senior citizens' network in their district and to contribute their own ideas and suggestions. Here you will find information about the contact persons and the current project plans.
