Agenda 2030

The 2030 Agenda is a roadmap for the future that will enable people around the world to live in dignity while preserving the natural foundations of life in the long term. It is a promise to all people to change the environment, economy and society in such a way that everyone can live well. Everyone can think, talk and participate.

What does the 2030 Agenda have to do with me and my city?

"Think globally, act locally" has been Mainz's motto for over 25 years. Sustainability has been increasingly concretized, from Local AGENDA 21 to the Millennium Development Goals to the 17 global sustainability goals within the framework of Agenda 2030. Local authorities and local actors from civil society play a crucial role in this process. Local authorities have a strong democratic tradition, a great deal of expertise in local and regional matters, and are interested in practical solutions for their citizens.

Sustainable action at the local level thus becomes tangible and establishes a direct link to globalization issues. The way we live, what we buy and consume, how we get from A to B, has a fundamental impact on resource and energy consumption, on the burden on the environment and climate, and on social justice here in Mainz and worldwide. We can only achieve a sustainable and just world if lifestyles around the globe change and we all become more sustainable in our consumption patterns and use of natural resources.

The good news is that more and more people are aware of their responsibility for future generations on this planet and are already demonstrating this in their choice of transportation or shopping habits. Gradual successes are also emerging in administration, such as increasing compliance with social and environmental standards in public procurement. And yet, there is still much to be done here as well.

Mainz is part of this world—together we can create a world worth living in for all people, leaving no one behind. Let the examples listed here inspire and encourage you to get involved!

Agenda 2030 - Leave no one behind!

From the Declaration of the United Nations General Assembly on AGENDA 2030

A global AGENDA for all

Sustainable development is crucial for the viability and future of our planet. This is the basic idea behind Agenda 2030, which was adopted by the United Nations in 2015.

Sustainability has a tangible impact on people's lives both locally and globally: "Leave no one behind" is the guiding principle of the 2030 Agenda.

AGENDA 2030 comprises 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Almost everything that was already decided in AGENDA 21 in 1992 can be found here. However, the work to implement the SDGs at the local level is now on a completely different footing, both politically and financially. Today, there is no longer any need to "fight" for the "recognition" of sustainability as a global goal; this necessity is accepted everywhere.

Since more than half of the world's population now lives in cities (by 2050, this figure is expected to rise to two-thirds), cities have a very important – indeed, decisive – role to play in implementing Agenda 2030.
