Coordination office for LGBTIQ equality
The state capital is committed to the equal treatment and equality of people with different sexual identities and same-sex lifestyles in accordance with the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG).
For this reason, the administration established a coordination office for same-sex lifestyles on January 1, 2013, thereby setting an important precedent for effective anti-discrimination policy. The name has since been changed to "Coordination Office for LGBTIQ Equality" in order to accommodate all target groups.
The four fields of action of the coordination office
The field of action "specialist policy work" encompasses the analysis and evaluation of social conditions for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer people (LGBTIQ) in the state capital of Mainz. The mayor, city leaders, and city council are advised and supported on this issue. The coordination office will lead discussions and information sessions on equality and anti-discrimination for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. It also works with LGBTIQ representatives from other institutions, such as the Rhineland-Palatinate Anti-Discrimination Agency and the contact point for LGBTI* people at the Rhineland-Palatinate State Police.
A second area of activity consists of supporting municipal departments and offices. In addition to providing expert advice to municipal departments, this also includes participation in municipal equality and anti-discrimination work and cooperation with the municipal equality office.
In the area of supporting associations and initiatives in the field of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer people, the aim is to establish networks, offer cooperation, and coordinate measures. This also includes the provision of municipal and other resources.
The fourth area of action, promoting acceptance and providing advice, involves public relations work, campaigns, prevention, and media relations. A particular focus is placed on work on individual topics such as age, youth, coming out counseling, intercultural understanding, and bullying in schools. To this end, information materials on same-sex lifestyles and specific specialist topics are also produced.
The coordination office is independent in terms of expertise and, due to the importance of the topic as a cross-cutting task, is located directly in the mayor's office.
