Blood donation dates

Save lives by donating blood! Here you will find contact points and information on where and when you can donate blood in the state capital Mainz.

Blood collection during a blood donation

Almost anyone can donate, provided you feel healthy and are at least 18 years old. Women can donate blood up to four times a year and men up to six times a year.

Blood donation procedure

Before donating, you should have eaten enough and, above all, drunk plenty of fluids so that your body can compensate for the blood loss. When you register, you will be asked to show your ID card and will be given a questionnaire to discuss with a doctor later. This is for your safety and that of the patient who will receive your blood. Your blood pressure will be measured and your hemoglobin level will be determined using a small drop of blood from your earlobe. This will also show whether you may have an iron deficiency. Later, in the laboratory, your blood will also be tested for diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, syphilis, and fifth disease. The blood collection itself takes about ten minutes, after which you will be given time to rest. As soon as you feel fit enough, you can make your way home. You should listen to your body.
