Since its founding in 1999, the network has initiated:

• The annual competition for the Best Of Wine Tourism Awards. This international competition was created to recognize businesses in each member city that excel in various categories, from art and culture to sustainable wine tourism. And that share their quality and experience with the public. Since the competition began, over 208 companies out of a total of 1,388 nominees have been honored.

• An economic network offering extensive training and information seminars, forums, and wine tastings. Appropriately equipped premises are also made available for visits between member cities.
  
  
• Specialist conferences by investment experts on all aspects of wine and wine education initiatives. These often take place in parallel with the annual general meetings, where important topics relevant to the wider world of wine are discussed.
  
  
• Technical and/or economic excursions to member wine regions. The exchange of expertise is an important part of the network, with the aim of benefiting from the know-how and individual marketing strategies of the network partners.

• A Great Wine Capital travel network to make travel even more attractive and enjoyable in terms of wine tourism highlights in the individual regions of the member countries. The incoming experts at each destination are specialists in wine experiences and work with regional providers to develop programs, tours, and guided tours on site. They are also able to fulfill travel requests to and between the Great Wine Capitals. Always in focus: the extraordinary cultural features, historical heritage, and geographical location of the member cities.
