Invisible for the most part
The Mainz-Süd flood protection wall
2007 saw the official launch of the flood protection wall between the Heidelberg cement works and the Mainz-Süd railway bridge. In the months that followed, sheet piles were driven into the ground along the railway line running through the area.
The steel elements, which are up to seven meters long, are firmly connected to each other and together form a "water barrier" covering more than 10,000 square meters. Because the bank rises in this area, only a small part of the wall protrudes from the ground. This means that the flood protection not only works above and below ground, but is also largely invisible.
Worth knowing

- Length: approx. 1.8 kilometers
- Cost: around €3.5 million, 90% of which was state funding
- Objective: Protection against a so-called 200-year flood (water level 8.30 m)
