Mainz discusses the mobility of tomorrow: Invitation to the 1st Mobility Forum

The first public mobility forum will take place on April 21, 2026 at LEIZA (Leibniz Center for Archaeology). It is the next step in the participation process for the Mainz Mobility Plan.

How do we want to get around Mainz in the future? Following a successful first round of online public engagement, the state capital of Mainz invites all interested parties to the first public mobility forum. On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the LEIZA will open its doors to all residents of the city and the surrounding area. Anyone who would like to learn about the current status, comment on initial interim results, or simply engage in conversation with city officials is warmly welcome.

Inform – Discuss – Help Shape

The focus of the first Mobility Forum is the question of how Mainz will be mobile in the future. Building on the results of the first online engagement and further analyses, the current situation will be discussed, a shared vision for the future will be explored, and ideas for better mobility in Mainz will be gathered.

The goal is to develop the mobility plan together with the people of Mainz and to highlight the diversity of perspectives—from everyday cyclists and public transit users to commuters and residents.

“Mobility affects everyone—that’s why it must also be shaped together. The Mobility Forum is a key component for us: We want to listen, understand, and work with the people of Mainz to develop solutions that work in everyday life. Because good solutions emerge where many perspectives come together,” emphasizes Janina Steinkrüger, Head of the Department of Environment and Mobility.

Program and Schedule

The first Mobility Forum will take place on April 21, 2026, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at LEIZA (Leibniz Center for Archaeology); doors open at 5:00 p.m. Following an introduction to the Mainz Mobility Plan by representatives of the city and the contracted consulting firms, the program will feature thematic stations and discussion panels. There, participants can provide feedback on their daily mobility and contribute ideas for improvements and new services. The results of the forum will be directly incorporated into the further development of the Mobility Plan and will complement the online participation that has already taken place.

The Mobility Forum is open and interactive in design and thrives on the exchange of different perspectives. All interested parties are cordially invited to participate. No prior knowledge is required. The venue is accessible. If you need additional support for accessible participation, please contact the Mainz Mobility Plan project team:

Background: The Mainz Mobility Plan

With the Mainz Mobility Plan, the city is bringing together all existing mobility concepts and projects under a single strategic umbrella for the first time—from the local transit plan and the cycling consensus to the 100% Climate Protection Master Plan. The goal is a clear, coordinated mobility strategy with measurable objectives and prioritized measures. The focus is not on individual modes of transportation, but on people’s needs—whether they travel on foot, by bike, by bus, or by car.

The Mainz Mobility Plan serves as the strategic framework for sustainable, livable, and climate-friendly mobility. The city is guided by the European SUMP (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan) approach, which is considered the gold standard for modern transportation planning across Europe. Mainz will be legally required to develop a SUMP starting in 2027—but is already consciously pursuing this path in collaboration with the city’s residents. The basis for this is the City Council resolution of October 11, 2023.

The first Mobility Forum is part of a broad participatory process. Following this, further online participation is planned for the fall, another Mobility Forum at the end of 2026, neighborhood walks, and mobility workshops with various target groups. All feedback will be directly incorporated into further planning.
