Rent arrears can arise due to insolvency and may lead to the loss of your accommodation.

If you have rent arrears, these can be covered under certain conditions if this serves to secure your accommodation.

This support is provided in the form of a loan or a grant. Unlike a loan, a grant does not have to be repaid.

The prerequisite is that you are unable to pay the rent arrears on your own. The decision on whether you receive support is always made on a case-by-case basis. You can still apply for support even if your lease has already been terminated due to rent arrears.

The authorities will check whether all the requirements for covering your rent arrears have been met. You can also seek advice on how to clear your rent arrears, for example by making installment payments.

There is no legal entitlement to have your rent debts covered.

• the costs for your current accommodation are reasonable
• Your landlord has agreed in writing to continue the tenancy
• You have submitted a letter of intent to remain in the apartment for the long term
• There is no way to remedy the emergency situation on your own, for example by agreeing to pay in installments
• Future rent payments are secured, for example through direct payments from the responsible benefits agency

There are no notes or special features.

There is no deadline. However, you should generally report any rent arrears as early as possible.
