In Mainz-Mombach, a large multifunctional sports hall/arena, the MainzArena, is to be built on the site of the "Am Großen Sand" sports hall. This hall will not only be used for school, popular, and elite sports, but also for cultural events, conferences, and other events. The aim is to create a new, high-performance infrastructure that offers many different uses.

Major sporting events such as regional and national competitions are to be held here, among other things. In particular, ball sports up to the 1st Bundesliga will be offered a platform. In addition, the Bundesliga home games of ASV Mainz 88 are to be held there.

In coordination with the sports administration of the state capital Mainz, the city sports association wrote to and surveyed sports clubs in Mainz. The focus was on sports clubs whose sports offerings would make them suitable candidates for using the hall. In addition, clubs whose sports are also to be practiced in the large sports hall were contacted. Furthermore, an advisory board for the planning of the large sports hall was established, which accompanies the entire planning process and is involved in all important decisions. It is composed of individuals from Mainz local politics (including the sports committee), association officials, and club representatives. The mayor of Mainz-Mombach is also a member, which means that the Mombach local advisory board is involved in the ongoing planning in its district.

Plans for the large port hall are being consistently developed. The construction and operating concept has been optimized, thereby reducing costs.

The previous cost estimate amounted to €66 million. Further development of the construction concept will significantly reduce construction costs and increase operating income through the multifunctional use of the hall.

The next steps at a glance are:

• The multifunctional large sports hall/multifunctional arena at the Mainz-Mombach site is to be realized on the basis of the optimized construction and operating concept.
• The project is to be financed primarily through the special fund of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate ("Rhineland-Palatinate Plan"). The project will be registered with the state of Rhineland-Palatinate as an eligible infrastructure project.
