Background
Over 1,000 bicycle parking spaces at the main station west
Over the last decade, the proportion of bicycle traffic in the city has doubled from 12% to 25%. Bicycles are thus increasingly establishing themselves as a means of transportation suitable for everyday use in urban traffic. Especially in the city center, they are a fast and direct alternative to car travel, alongside buses, trams, and footpaths. This increase has also been accompanied by greater diversity in bicycle models: more and more users are investing in higher-quality bicycles, especially pedelecs and cargo bikes. This has also resulted in a growing demand for high-quality bicycle parking spaces that offer not only convenient, protected parking but also security. The area around the main station, as a multimodal transport hub, is a particular target for this.
Mainz idea built by the city and operated by PMG
The fahrRad.Parkhaus was born from an idea by the Mainz-based firm "Schoyerer Architekten_Syra," (opens in a new tab) which also took on the further planning of the project. It was implemented by Gebäudewirtschaft Mainz GWM at a construction cost of €1.3 million. The task at hand and the location were not everyday terrain and, in particular, presented a varied challenge from an architectural point of view. The result is a highly functional and visually appealing structure. Thanks to the expanded metal façade, the area under the high bridge appears open and bright. The yellow flooring and the double-decker parking racks in five different colors also contribute to the friendly appearance. The colors also improve orientation and clarity: you just have to remember that your bike is in the pink or blue area, for example, and then you can go there without having to search through the individual rows, which are of course numbered consecutively.
The opening of the fahrRad.Parkhaus represents another milestone in the sustainable promotion of cycling in the city of Mainz. The focus was not only on expanding bicycle parking capacity, but also on ensuring that it was available free of charge for the most part. With PMG, users also have the support of an experienced operator that is already well established in Mainz when it comes to safe and convenient parking.
