Association supports private individuals in lawsuit against airport expansion
For years, the city of Mainz, along with many other municipalities and corporations, has been fighting against the planned expansion of Frankfurt Airport as part of the "Zukunft Rhein Main" (ZRM) initiative. Private citizens also submitted a total of more than 14,000 objections from Mainz alone to the Darmstadt Regional Council as part of the planning approval process.
In addition to "public interest groups" such as the city of Mainz, numerous private individuals are considering taking legal action against the planned expansion in court. Private individuals can assert other concerns in the event of an expansion than those that the city of Mainz could pursue in court. Such
a lawsuit as a private individual is time-consuming, complex, and costly. For this reason, committed citizens have founded the association "Für ein lebenswertes Mainz und Rheinhessen - Gegen Fluglärm und den Ausbau des Frankfurter Flughafens e.V." (For a livable Mainz and Rheinhessen - Against aircraft noise and the expansion of Frankfurt Airport) in order to take legal action against the airport expansion on a private level and thus enable private individuals to assert their rights in court.
The city of Mainz expressly welcomes the founding of the association.
The association consists exclusively of volunteer citizens who have long been committed to opposing the airport expansion. The board is advised by its advisory board, which consists of well-known representatives from regional politics, science, and business.
The association works closely with the action group, as well as with the Alliance of Citizens' Initiatives (BBI), BUND Hessen, initiatives, and church associations. The association aims to demonstrate the solidarity and common interests of the people of Rheinhessen and Mainz.
The association will support lead plaintiffs from Mainz and the area on the left bank of the Rhine in their lawsuit. In court, it should become clear that the region extends beyond the Rhine.
Once the lead plaintiffs have been determined, the association will provide financial support for their lawsuits through a renowned law firm. In doing so, the association will work closely with the municipal committees and the legal department of the city of Mainz.
