During construction work in the park on Fritz-Bockius-Straße in Mainz-Hartenberg-Münchfeld, the remains of a 250-kilogram American World War II bomb were found on Tuesday afternoon. After the discovery, the Rhineland-Palatinate Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service determined that the unexploded ordnance must be defused.

The defusing operation requires an evacuation within a radius of approximately 250 meters around the discovery site. This affects around 1,900 people as well as the Taubertsbergbad.

The evacuation of the designated area has now been completed. The evacuation zone has been fully cleared and inspected. The operation proceeded according to plan and without major problems. Special thanks go to the public, who cooperated in a very calm and exemplary manner, thereby contributing significantly to the smooth execution of the evacuation.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team can now begin defusing the bomb as planned. The restricted area remains in effect. The duration of the defusing process cannot be accurately estimated.

We will provide an update as soon as the bomb has been successfully defused and the restricted area can be lifted. Until then, please avoid the area and take a wide detour around it.

These measures are being coordinated by the fire department’s command staff. A total of approximately 220 personnel from the fire department, aid organizations, police, public order authorities, and the explosive ordnance disposal unit are on the scene.
