The Istanbul Convention in Germany

Germany ratified the Istanbul Convention in October 2017 and brought it into force on February 1, 2018.

This means that the federal government, states, and municipalities must also work together to effectively combat violence against women and girls. Of the 81 articles in the Istanbul Convention, twelve are particularly important for the role of municipalities, while other articles primarily apply to the federal government and the states.
