Old women and partner violence

Mainz network active against violence in relationships of older women

The expert group "Elderly Women and Partner Violence" places particular emphasis on partner violence in the lives of elderly women with a care background. This is because in cases where perpetrators or victims of violence are in need of care, protection from violence is particularly difficult: the Protection Against Violence Act, or the Police and Public Order Act, is difficult to implement if, for example, the perpetrator is to be removed from the home. This is because if the man or woman is in need of care, there is a lack of suitable accommodation or care structures that can take over and guarantee care and support at short notice. Even women's shelters cannot offer suitable care structures for this group of people. There is a lack of standardized crisis intervention measures as well as emergency beds in care facilities.

Flyer: It's never too late to change something - Old women and partner violence

With the flyer "It's never too late to change," the subgroup informs victims, relatives, and professionals working with the elderly about domestic violence in the lives of older women. Further background information on the topic is summarized in the inserts "Why intimate partner violence occurs in old age and violence can escalate in already strained couple relationships in old age" and "Why it is particularly difficult for the generation of today's older and elderly women to break free from a violent relationship."

Members

Founded in 2015 by Frauennotruf (Women's Emergency Hotline) and Frauenbüro Mainz (Women's Office Mainz) as well as the police victim counseling service, the sub-group "Elderly Women and Partner Violence" of the AK Gewalt (Working Group on Violence) initially focused on establishing and expanding a professional network. And it has been very successful. In addition to the founders, the expert committee now includes the Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft für Paritätische Sozialarbeit mbH (Non-profit Society for Equal Social Work), care centers, the social psychiatric service, and the social planning department of the city of Mainz.
