The workshop card is a tachograph card for

• approved manufacturers of tachographs,
• vehicle manufacturers,
• workshops, and
• their responsible specialists, such as installers or technicians.

Your responsible specialists use the workshop card to install, check, calibrate, and download data from digital tachographs.

If your workshop card has been lost, you, as the business owner or as an authorized representative or agent, can apply for a replacement card from the relevant authority. To do this, you must present a current certificate of recognition or authorization of the workshop for the inspection of tachographs. This must not be more than 3 years old.

Your workshop replacement card will remain valid until the same date as the lost original card – if it would have been valid for more than 6 months. The validity period does not start again from the beginning.

However, if the remaining validity period of the card is less than 6 months, you will receive a replacement card. This will then be valid for another year.

When the replacement card is issued, your previous card loses its validity. If you do find your workshop card again, you must return it to the responsible authority or the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). You may not continue to use it.

When applying for a replacement workshop card due to loss, your company must provide proof that the designated specialist is still employed by you and has been trained in accordance with the tachograph card and control device training guidelines. The training certificate must not be more than 3 years old.

The workshop card is PIN-protected. The specialist will receive their personal PIN number at their home address. Specialists may only have one workshop card per employment relationship and may only use it there. The workshop card is the property of the company.

• Your company is
  • an officially recognized manufacturer of tachographs,
  • a vehicle repair shop commissioned by the manufacturer, or
  • an approved and recognized automotive repair shop.
• The following are eligible to apply
  • you as an entrepreneur or a
  • authorized representative or agent of the company.

• Validity period: 1 year
  The workshop card is valid for one year.

District administrations or municipal administrations of independent cities and large district-affiliated cities

• Application for the issuance of a workshop replacement card due to loss
• Verifiable documents confirming the name, address, and registered office of the workshop, the manufacturer of the tachograph, or the vehicle manufacturer
• Proof of identity of the entrepreneur or the person or persons authorized to represent the company in accordance with the law, articles of association, or partnership agreement
• Proof of identity and notification of the native language of the specialist for whom the workshop card is being requested
• Proof of training of the responsible specialist in accordance with the tachograph control device training guideline
  • not older than 3 years
• Proof of the employment relationship of the responsible specialist
• Proof of recognition or commissioning of the workshop (in accordance with Section 57b of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations)
  • Not older than 3 years
• Written statement regarding the loss
• At the request of the competent authority, the holder of the workshop card must, if necessary, make a sworn statement that and for what reasons the workshop card cannot be returned.
