Driving license: Apply for a new one
Online services
If your driver's license has been revoked by a court ruling or by the driver's license office, you can apply for a new license after the expiry of any suspension period that may have been imposed.
Would you like to drive a motor vehicle on public roads again? Then you must apply for a new driver's license.
What do I need to know?
Service description
If your driver's license has been revoked, you can reapply for it after any specified suspension period has expired. During the application process, you must prove that you are once again capable and suitable for driving motor vehicles.
The driver's license is issued for an indefinite period.
For classes C, C1, CE, C1E, D, D1, DE, and D1E, the driver's license is issued for a limited period.
Note:
If you have surrendered your driver's license as part of a temporary driving ban (e.g., for speeding), you do not need to apply for a new license. Your driver's license will be returned to you "automatically" after the temporary ban has expired.
- Revocation of driving license: You
can apply for a new license at the earliest 6 months before the end of the suspension period. - Renunciation of driving license: You can
apply for a new license at any time.
Application
- You must appear in person (for identification and signature)
- Please note the application deadlines
Prerequisites
- Primary residence in Mainz
- Expiration of the fixed suspension period in the event of withdrawal of driving license
- You will not automatically receive a new driver's license. You must apply for a driver's license.
- After you have submitted your application, the driver's license authority will check whether you are physically, mentally, and characteristically fit to drive motor vehicles again. As a rule, the same regulations apply to the reissuance of a driver's license as to the initial issuance of a driver's license.
- A new driver's license test is only necessary if it must be assumed that you no longer possess the knowledge and skills required to drive a motor vehicle.
- A medical-psychological assessment is always required in the event of a repeated revocation of your driver's license. It is also required in the event of a first-time revocation due to narcotics. We also require a medical-psychological assessment in the case of a revocation due to drunk driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 1.6 per mille or a breath alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.8 mg/l or more. To address any alcohol and/or drug problems you may have, you should contact a preparation center at an early stage. In addition, many medical-psychological assessment centers offer free information evenings. The aim of these is to familiarize you with the procedure and process of a medical-psychological assessment (MPU).
Remark
Since January 19, 2013, we no longer issue card driver's licenses for life. They are limited to a period of 15 years. However, the time limit only applies to the driver's license document. You must have it renewed every 15 years. Regular medical examinations or other tests are not associated with the document exchange.
Legal basis
What do I need to bring or submit?
- Valid identity card or passport (with current registration certificate, if applicable)
- Current biometric photo (size 45x35 mm, portrait format, frontal view)
- Eye test certificate (not older than 2 years)
- Proof of participation in a first aid training course
For applications for driving licenses in categories C, C1, CE, C1E, D, D1, DE, or D1E, the following are also required:
- Medical certificate. If a medical-psychological examination (MPU) is required, this is not necessary.
- Ophthalmological examination
- For classes D1, D1E, and D, DE, an additional examination of special requirements
For applications for driving licenses in categories D, D1, DE, and D1E, the following is also required:
- Certificate of good conduct (required for every new license, not just bus licenses)
- Current biometric photo (size 45x35 mm, portrait format, frontal view), no digital code possible!
Note:
Since May 1, 2025, the rule for passport photos for identity cards and passports is that you must submit a digital passport photo to the registration authority. However, this requirement does not apply to the driver's license authority and therefore does not affect applications for driver's license documents. Please also note that the driver's license authorities do not have the technical equipment to take photos on site. You must therefore submit passport photos in analog form, preferably together with the complete application documents, to the driver's license authority.
- If applicable, proof of basic qualification in accordance with the Professional Driver Qualification Act for commercial goods or passenger transport on public roads
-
If applicable, a copy of the index card from the issuing authority (if the lost/stolen driver's license was not issued by the state capital of Mainz)
To speed up the issuance of the replacement driver's license, you can request the index card transcript in advance by telephone from the driver's license authority that originally issued the license.
Classes D1, D1E, D, and DE
- Psychological test report in accordance with Appendix 5 No. 2 of the Driver's License Regulation
Note:
Apply for a police clearance certificate for authorities (document type 0) at the registration office. It will be sent directly to the driver's license authority.
Collection of the card driving license from the driver's license authority
