Would you like a specific combination of letters or numbers for your license plate, for example

• an initial,
• your company's abbreviation,
• a date of birth or wedding date, or
• would you like an "old license plate" that is available again in your district together with a specific identification number for your vehicle?

For a fee, you can apply for a personalized license plate or reserve one in advance.

If you would like to use the personalized license plate of your deregistered vehicle again later in the same administrative district, you can reserve the identification number for a certain period of time for a fee and reapply for it in connection with the re-registration or registration of another vehicle. A reservation for a personalized license plate expires if you move a deregistered vehicle. Please contact the registration authority in advance.

Please note:

• Subsequent changes to a license plate combination assigned to a vehicle are only possible for an additional fee.
• A personalized license plate reserved in another registration district cannot be transferred to the new registration district when you move.

Note: The registration authorities will try to accommodate your wishes. However, you have no legal right to a personalized license plate.

• You cannot use the "KFZ Wunschkennzeichenreservierung online" portal on Windows XP computers or on computers with .NET Framework versions lower than 4.5.2 installed.

• To prevent misuse of reservations, the reserved license plate may only be transferred to third parties upon presentation of a declaration of consent.

• You can also choose a personalized license plate if the vehicle has already been assigned a Mainz license plate.

• When decommissioning a Mainz vehicle, you can reserve the previous license plate for the vehicle owner or the vehicle for one year.

• Advance reservation is not mandatory for the allocation of a personalized license plate. You can also apply for a personalized license plate when registering the vehicle at the local registration authority.

If you have reserved a personalized license plate in advance, you will need the reservation confirmation for the registration process.

In addition to the registration fees, you will incur administrative fees for

• Personalized license plates: EUR 10.20
• Reservation: EUR 2.60

Note: If you opt for an "old license plate" with multiple distinguishing marks in an administrative district, you only have to pay a personalized license plate fee if you also want a specific alphanumeric combination.

Please note: An additional electronic query is required to determine whether the identification number you want can be assigned by the registration authority. The fees will therefore still be charged even if your personalized license plate is not available.

The additional fee will also be charged for the reservation or reallocation of a license plate that has already been assigned at an earlier date.
