M for future - My streetcar city Sub-project 3 - Heiligkreuz district connection
Brief description
On June 3, 2020, the city council passed a resolution to further expand the tram network in Mainz. New routes are to be examined, planned, and implemented for the further development of the Mainz tram network. Comprehensive public participation is to accompany the planning of the specific tram projects.
The project is divided into the following sub-projects:
- Subproject 1 – Binger Straße
Closing the gap between Alicenplatz and Münsterplatz - Subproject 2 – City center
With development of Neustadt and central development of the old town (including Höfchen) - Subproject 3 – Connection to the Heiligkreuz district
Connection of the new Heiligkreuz district and parts of the upper town, Weisenau, and Hechtsheim-Ost, as well as connection to the university hospital - Long-term development of the tram network, including possible connections to the surrounding area of Rheinhessen (measure not yet started)
Since 2017, the Heiligkreuz district has been developing between Hechtsheimer Straße and Heiligkreuzweg, creating a new neighborhood with around 2,000 apartments for approximately 6,000 residents. Thanks to its walking distance to Mainz's green belt, direct motorway access, and first-class infrastructure, the 34-hectare district will offer a high quality of life. In addition to the planned city bus stop in the middle of the neighborhood, a new tram line to Mainz city center will contribute significantly to the attractiveness of the Heiligkreuz neighborhood. As the route will affect the upper city and probably also parts of Weisenau and Hechtsheim, the new line will have positive effects for many other people in Mainz.
Citizen participation
All citizens can contribute their comments and suggestions through various participation opportunities. It will be ensured that the objections heard at the events are passed on to the planning table and that these questions and comments are dealt with seriously. How the suggestions and concerns are dealt with will be examined on a case-by-case basis. This means that it will be examined which interests can be pursued and included in the planning and which cannot. In the latter case, a comprehensible explanation will be provided.
Multi-stage participation formats are taking place in the various sub-projects:
- Kick-off event
- Online participation
- Theme market
- Theme workshops
- Interest advisory board
- Closing event
Total duration: approximately 24 months; dates will be announced on the Mainz Mobility project page (opens in a new tab).
Last but not least, there is also the legally required public participation in the course of the planning approval process. All planning documents, including expert opinions and reports, will be published there, and private, public, and nature conservation issues will be weighed against the impact of the project.
