Kasteler banks of the Rhine
The Theodor Heuss Bridge connects the Mainz bank of the Rhine with the Kastel side of the river. Here, too, there are a wide range of leisure activities on offer on both sides of the bridge: sunbathing until sunset, visiting the beach, walking to the Maaraue, exploring the historic Reduit, or relaxing on the Rhine meadows—there are so many possibilities.
Reduit
The Reduit Barracks in Mainz-Kastel were built during the expansion of the Mainz fortress at the beginning of the 19th century. The aim was to fortify the Kastel bridgehead of the Theodor Heuss Bridge. Today, the fortress is located in the Mainz-Kastel district, which is administered in trust by Wiesbaden. Children, young people, and adults meet here for live concerts, festivals, and children's and sports festivals. Culture, entertainment, and the view of Mainz Cathedral attract people to the fortress, which is located directly on the Rhine. Summer in the Reduit (opens in a new tab)is a fixed date in the cultural calendar of Mainz and Wiesbaden every year.
The Castellum Museum, run by the Kastel Local History Society, presents over 2,000 years of Kastel's history. The Reduit also houses the AKK Children's and Youth Center (opens in a new tab). Directly in front of the Reduit Kastel, the Rhine beach operated by Bastion Schönborn is open in summer. It's a wonderful place to relax in deck chairs until the sun sets over the rooftops of Mainz. The restaurant ship "Pieter von Aemstel (opens in a new tab)," which is moored directly in front of the Reduit all year round, is also a great place to enjoy a leisurely meal with a view of the Mainz city panorama.
Bastion of Schönborn
The Schönborn Bastion (opens in a new tab) is a reconstructed blockhouse of the former federal fortress Reduit (Mainz-Kastel) on the right bank of the Rhine opposite the Mainz fortress. It used to protect the pontoon bridge on the south-eastern flank, but today it is a place where you can dine and enjoy the view of the Mainz skyline. The first floor of the building houses the so-called rafters' room. Here in the Kastel "Rafters' Museum," numerous exhibits relating to this ancient profession are on display.
