In 2022, the SchUM cities launched their first joint artist-in-residence program. International artists were invited to engage with the rich tradition of the SchUM Jewish Community Federation during a six-week residency.

A distinguished jury ultimately selected Avery Gosfield from Italy, who created compositions based on Jewish textual and musical traditions from the Middle Ages, as well as Katya Oicherman, USA, who illustrated Juspa Schammes’s Worms “Minhagbuch” with hand embroidery, and Germán Morales from Argentina, who captured the architectural heritage of the three cities through drawings and photographs.

The camera team from Visualkey Filmproduktion Mainz documented the scholarship recipients’ work. The documentary film “THREE INSIGHTS INTO SHUM” clearly highlights just how much the medieval SchUM sites—with their synagogues, mikvaot, Talmud schools, and cemeteries—still fascinate artists worldwide today.
