lower house Mainz
Since its opening in 1966, cabaret, song and chanson, comedy and all mixed forms of cabaret have been performed at the unterhaus. It is considered one of the most important centers for cabaret in Germany.
Every evening, the bell that Hanns Dieter Hüsch hung in the foyer of the unterhaus in 1971 from his capsized 'arche nova' rings in the performances and signals: Attention, this is not a place for conformity!
The unterhaus bell is also the symbol of the German Cabaret Award. Every year—always on the first Sunday after Rose Monday—the winners in the categories of cabaret, chanson/song/music, and cabaret, as well as the City of Mainz's sponsorship award, are honored with the German Cabaret Award. The award ceremony takes place at the Forum Theater unterhaus in Mainz.
