lower house Mainz
Since its opening in 1966, cabaret, song and chanson, comedy and all mixed forms of cabaret have been performed at the unterhaus. It is considered one of the most important centers for cabaret in Germany.
"Every evening, the bell that Hanns Dieter Hüsch hung in the unterhaus foyer in 1971—taken from his capsized 'arche nova'—heralds the start of the performances and signals: 'Watch out—this isn't mainstream!'"
The unterhaus bell is also the symbol of the German Cabaret Award. Every year—always on the first Sunday after Rosenmontag—winners in the categories of cabaret, chanson/song/music, and variety arts, as well as the recipient of the City of Mainz’s Sponsorship Award, are honored with the German Variety Arts Award. The awards ceremony takes place at the Forum-Theater unterhaus in Mainz.
